Some people just dont get it

Right, I've spent the past couple of days arguing with some knob about how this movies good when he says its toss (coming from a guy who gave dungeons and dragons 2 a 7 and this a 1, I think we can gather he's pretty clueless) look Jack brooks monster slayer is a great little movie, the memory of being 10 years old and watching movies like camerons closet, neon maniacs, chud, re-animator, evil dead, spookies and so many other low budget horror comedies of the early to mid 80's, I thought was gonna be truly just that, a memory, sure we've had movies desperately trying to be oh so cool and modern with their self knowing mocking of the genre, but some of the best horrors ever, were those horrors didnt take themselves seriously, this is were Jack more than succeed's, it's fun, it's silly, it's gotta a low budget (but to be completely honest I personally dont think it shows) the acting could be better (as its always gonna be compared to evil dead, come on bruce in 1) but it knows what it is, and its more than happy with that, and thank god it is, because that much belief and level of conviction make this movie a far better experience than it should have any right to be.
Now no matter what, some idiot is always gonna compare this movie to evil dead, and yes I sorta see your point, but evil dead was one of the greatest movies of all time, I mean come on if there was a list of the top five low budget movies ever, it'd be in there and probably number one, so really is that such a bad thing to aspire too? as I live in the uk I saw no camp advertising, pandering to evil dead fans, infact if it hadnt been for youtube and some research I'dhave probably struggled to hear about this movie, which if given a limited cinematic release over here would have done pretty well, armies of darkness and bubba ho tep both did well in this country after limited releases, when will the states realise that the uk is a great place to show low budget horror, we love it, come on if it wasnt for the uk and palace pictures, you probably wouldnt have even seen an evil dead 2.
Anyway, watch Jack Brooks its a good, goofy horror, better made than its budget should have allowed and a complete riot from beginning to end, my only problem is that mr englund wont be in the second, he brought a fantastic sense of fun to this movie.
Roll on the sequel.

Well, ever consider the fact that some people got it, but just didn't like it? I understand it's a throwback to the 80's/pre CG days of low budget monster movies, but it wasn't even good on that level.

Nothing happens for the first hour, just some lame dialogue and scenes that the director thought were comedy gold, but are just difficult to sit through. No funny lines, just dribble for literally 50 minutes. It took all my effort not to turn it off, cause I thought maybe it'd have an awesome ending, which it doesn't. The anger problem subplot was so terrible and unnecessary, but had they taken it out, the movie would be 70 mins or so...gotta love all the filler in this movie right?

Then the profesor changes, finally, something might happen. Then it's 20 mins of 30 year olds running down a high school hallway and getting grabbed by some lame tentacle things we've all seen before. Then we get the big "hero transformation" scene, leading me to believe Brooks might be a badass, but no. He kills 2 zombies, cuts some tentacles, then fights the professor monster, which was such a lame ending that I can't even remember how he does it. Then some stupid freeze frame ends the movie before he fights the forest troll, so in total, jack brooks monster slayer kills exactly ONE monster...epitome of lame in my book...

The professor monster was cool, but is it worth 60 mins of the worst dialogue ever put to film? For me, no, not even close. I don't think I could physically sit through this movie again, as in, if someone put it on, I would leave cause it hurts my eyes to see it...literally... or maybe i didn't get it cause I don't like it right?

Once again OPINION!!

Personally I loved JB:MS, and the fact that it’s the "origin story" allows it to get away with some the weaker moment’s imo.
I loved almost every scene with Bob England, he was amazing through out. The build up did take a while, but personally I enjoyed it. The dialog was decent to very strong, as was the acting.

Get over yourself. It’s a shame you didn’t enjoy it, but film is subjective.

Oh and I love your sig, check the punctuation. You're means you are. I think you're looking to use a your in your sig, but hey the opinion of someone who cant seem to grasp basic english means ever so much to me.

Seriously.

No really it does.

We have such sights to show you.

Dialogue was strong? The acting was decent? Maybe we we're watching 2 different movies. And yeah, it's fairly obvious this is all opinion, but that's not what bothered you cause otherwise you'd be yelling at everyone, regardless of their opinion. No, I have a DIFFERENT opinion than you, and rather than try to talk about something useful, you talk about the syntax in my signature? Nice try man, but i'm not 12, I won't get sucked into something as juvenile as that...

I think this movie was campy fun. Reminded me of the old school horror flicks from the 80's.

My number one low-budget horror movie is probally Halloween though. But evil dead is right behind it.

As a child of the 80's it didn't remind me of anything. Well maybe the turd monster from Weird Science. But over all I laughed a few times and then wondered why it had any hype at all. Kudos to the low budget FX work and 4 or 5 good lines. Other than that a complete mess. For 80's fun see Hatchet instead.

Well said. I found this movie to be a lot of fun. I did think it could have spent more time on the action than it did, but once Jack went into "Monster Slayer" mode, that's when I really started enjoying it. Overall, a great and fun popcorn flick.

I agree, this movie was great. Even if it was just a "setup" even that was entertaining because Jack Brooks was just an interesting character.

HAHA... First, I love it when people ALWAYS have to bring up the other persons punctuation when they're arguing on the internet. Who cares? EVERYONES spelling and punctuation can be bad, including mine.

Anyway, I thought this movie was KICKASS. But some aren't going to like it, period.
And yes, some people are going to compare it to another movie. Can't expect EVERYONE who likes low budget gory horror films to like this movie. So just deal with it because everyone is free of their own opinion. And if comparing movies to other movies is their way of stating an opinion, so be it!
I mean come on..they're probably laughing at YOU for even making this topic because you're letting people who you don't even know, ON THE INTERNET may I add, bother you.

Cheers!

I loved this movie. I thought the dialog was hilarious! "I once broke a bottle over my head because I couldn't figure out how to open it, what sense does that make?"

**Possible Spoilers**

Just finished watching this and personally, I thought it was great. I didn't see it as quite as slow as everyone else thought. There was some demon action at the begining, then a few flashbacks to other demon action, and just watching England transform was a lot of fun. The action at the end was more than just ten minutes, it actually started about the hour mark. I guess for me the diaologue was well written enough, the humor good, and the pacing decent. I wasn't looking for an award winning horror film, but just a kick back to cheesy, stupid fun, which it was.

It always surprises me that people are so critical of a film like this. Obviously the filmmakers weren't going for a piece of art, but just a fun popcorn movie. Personally, I'm glad we are getting more than low budget ghost stories or slasher flicks in the way of straight to dvd horror. This is certainly nowhere near as bad as many of the efforts put out over the years.

All Jack Brooks was was an attempt at a horror comedy gone flat. The special effects looked good at times but for the most part they all looked like something out of Power Rangers or some Sci-Fi Channel movies. The budget shows in places, the only good part in the movie was the last 20 minutes or so but even then it didn't make up for the first hour of the film. Hell, the big turd monster looked like Jabba the Hut.

It wasn't very funny either. I thought it was boring.

It's not that some of us just don't get it, we just don't like it. I think I would perfer watching a horror movie made these days that is merely a special effects orgasm.

Summary of how "great" the writing was in this movie... I fell asleep 1/2 an hour into it and woke up just as Robert E. was changing into the monster. There was not one thing I felt I missed, I missed an hour of the movie but didn't notice at all.

After I realized that I had fallen asleep, I rewatched the movie and realized that NONE of the parts that I missed mattered at all.
