Less is More, More or Less...?

I can understand why people want another series of this really top quality costume drama - just as good as Pride & Prejudice, though in a different way.

However, there's an equally strong argument for leaving it the neat little period piece it stands as, rather than forcing the plotlines for a second series.

What a superb piece of ensemble acting, writing and attention to authenticity and credibility.

Top of the range...

I think it's more the frustration that there were a number of loose ends at the close of series one which many would like to see resolved. These characters were so wonderful, people want to know what happens to them. That's the most flattering thing you can say to a storyteller, and the writer, production team and actors clearly did a marvellous job to inspire that reaction.

I'm having double feelings about this. Part of me would really love to see what happens next. The other part of me fears that a second series might not live up to the same expectations and level of quality. I don't know if Heidi Thomas has some storylines ready. If not, she will have very little time to write a second series, probably less time than she will have had for writing the first 8 episodes. The pressure of delivering something everyone will love again is also higher. And it IS possible to see these first episodes sort of as rounded of storylines, filling in the gaps ourselves. It's sort of a full circle and we could fill in the rest ourselves.

Some posters at the BBC message-board have emailed writer Heidi Thomas and got a reply from her, which expresses (apart from appreciation of support) that the cast and crew were very dissapointed that the series is being axed. In other words, material for series 2 was probably (nearly) ready. Which makes me feel extra sorry at there not being a series 2. BRING BACK LILIES!!!!!!!!!

I can understand your point, but it makes me angry that the BBC can cancel a magnificent piece of work like Lillies, whilst continuing to force absolute dross like Robin Hood and Torchwood down our throats.

Why rely on the BBC to make the second series? Lilies was made by an Independant company World Productions, they could easily take it somewhere else like ITV when the 285th series of Heartbeat finishes! By rights the people of Aidensfield should be around the Ghetto blaster by now singing:

"Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand....!"

It's so sad that things like this still get the airtime and Lilies didn't get the chance to develop. What a crying shame :~(
