The biggest goof of all...
I've read all the "problems with this show/writing/continuity" threads on this board, and this is not mentioned by anyone, and amazingly only mentioned by Micah and Nikki in the pilot, for about 20-30secs.
I think this might even trump the "magic immortal blood" ala Claire/Adam Munroe
/!\ VIEWING A TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE WILL CAUSE PERMANENT EYE DAMAGE AND BLINDNESS. /!\
This is the absolute #1 thing about this show that I can't get over. Every single character with abilities, with the exception of Micah and Nikki Sanders, stares directly at not just 1, but THREE TOTAL solar eclipses within the space of 3 seasons. (We won't go into how rare it is to have 2 full solar eclipses within the space of 3 years viewable from the same parts of the world)
But I digress, I've looked past it for too long, that even now rewatching this show for about the 10th or 11th time over, I just can't figure out how this is explainable within the universe.
It is remotely possible that every character somehow has a secondary ability to be immune to the damage caused by looking directly at one due whatever funky DNA stuff is going on, but that is never explained or mentioned, and the scene with Nikki viewing the first eclipse through a pinhole camera is the only safe viewing of it in the entire show, including the S2 "1607" Takenzo Kensei story-arc.
There are so many other plot holes that I've seen and read over the years, but I think most can be overlooked the majority of the time, because overall the show is/was different, entertaining, engaging and thrilling while still being a good sci-fi serial, but the huge problem with not explaining or actually telling people this, is by using the Solar Eclipse as a plot device in several major points of the whole story.
Out of all the mature themes in this show, I would of expected a bit more of a scientific, and generally more safer "teaching the audience" approach to it, or at least an explanation as to why they can all look at a full eclipse and not blink an eye...
But even if somehow only people with abilities can look at one unharmed, that wouldn't explain how Ando can look at it, or how Mohinder (pre injection) or Noah or any other of the main non-special characters gawked directly into it without their eyes catching fire...
Did TK not know how dangerous it is? If he didn't, didn't any of the writers have the guts to tell him? Or write something useful into the storyline...
Granted, you might not go completely blind from looking into one, but if the observer is inside the Moon's umbra during a total solar eclipse, while you are starting directly at the sun without filters or anything, or even using regular sunglasses, most people will go blind within seconds.
This is about the only complaint about this show I have, apart from pacing here and there, the minor plot-holes can be overlooked but stacked onto each other gets a bit much at times.
My only other complaint about this show is after Season 1; Adam Munroe character should of replaced Claire altogether. Their abilities are practically the same, and they spent an entire season (#2) building up his character, only to have him thrown at Arthur's bedside and 400 years (and an entire season) turns to dust in an instant. What a waste, and Claire brings this show down more than she does favours for it
All in all the show for me follows a wave of "getting good" and "slowing down". It never really loses it's spark, 2 and 4 were lower points to the series, while 1 and 3 are the highs for me :)
