The biggest goof of all...

I've read all the "problems with this show/writing/continuity" threads on this board, and this is not mentioned by anyone, and amazingly only mentioned by Micah and Nikki in the pilot, for about 20-30secs.

I think this might even trump the "magic immortal blood" ala Claire/Adam Munroe

/!\ VIEWING A TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE WILL CAUSE PERMANENT EYE DAMAGE AND BLINDNESS. /!\

This is the absolute #1 thing about this show that I can't get over. Every single character with abilities, with the exception of Micah and Nikki Sanders, stares directly at not just 1, but THREE TOTAL solar eclipses within the space of 3 seasons. (We won't go into how rare it is to have 2 full solar eclipses within the space of 3 years viewable from the same parts of the world)

But I digress, I've looked past it for too long, that even now rewatching this show for about the 10th or 11th time over, I just can't figure out how this is explainable within the universe.
It is remotely possible that every character somehow has a secondary ability to be immune to the damage caused by looking directly at one due whatever funky DNA stuff is going on, but that is never explained or mentioned, and the scene with Nikki viewing the first eclipse through a pinhole camera is the only safe viewing of it in the entire show, including the S2 "1607" Takenzo Kensei story-arc.

There are so many other plot holes that I've seen and read over the years, but I think most can be overlooked the majority of the time, because overall the show is/was different, entertaining, engaging and thrilling while still being a good sci-fi serial, but the huge problem with not explaining or actually telling people this, is by using the Solar Eclipse as a plot device in several major points of the whole story.

Out of all the mature themes in this show, I would of expected a bit more of a scientific, and generally more safer "teaching the audience" approach to it, or at least an explanation as to why they can all look at a full eclipse and not blink an eye...
But even if somehow only people with abilities can look at one unharmed, that wouldn't explain how Ando can look at it, or how Mohinder (pre injection) or Noah or any other of the main non-special characters gawked directly into it without their eyes catching fire...

Did TK not know how dangerous it is? If he didn't, didn't any of the writers have the guts to tell him? Or write something useful into the storyline...

Granted, you might not go completely blind from looking into one, but if the observer is inside the Moon's umbra during a total solar eclipse, while you are starting directly at the sun without filters or anything, or even using regular sunglasses, most people will go blind within seconds.

This is about the only complaint about this show I have, apart from pacing here and there, the minor plot-holes can be overlooked but stacked onto each other gets a bit much at times.
My only other complaint about this show is after Season 1; Adam Munroe character should of replaced Claire altogether. Their abilities are practically the same, and they spent an entire season (#2) building up his character, only to have him thrown at Arthur's bedside and 400 years (and an entire season) turns to dust in an instant. What a waste, and Claire brings this show down more than she does favours for it

All in all the show for me follows a wave of "getting good" and "slowing down". It never really loses it's spark, 2 and 4 were lower points to the series, while 1 and 3 are the highs for me :)

I totally think the same thing about season order, for me too 1 and 3 were good.I mean people, seriously...This is a show about people with "superpowers", *beep* s-u-p-e-r-p-o-w-e-r-s.Do we have to watch characters bounding every single minute of every episode and every episode of the whole season...We need some bangin' and shootin', less drama more zapping and power showoffs. (I'm not saying we don't need it all, just less then gutting)

And I can't leave this unsaid, Bryan Fuller kept that line really stabilized. In S1, you both follow character's emotional development and bounding with other characters' story without getting bored and you see some serious zapping.

But then, it sucked--- until Bryan came back and did one last episode 3x20.And that, fellas, was hell of an awesome episode (if you don't remember, let me = ando uses his street fighter kind ability, hiro strikes again.Tracy freezes everyone's *beep* while they're alive).

Sylar cut off Claire's skull and it didn't grow back!!

Now this a what i call a goof.

do you know it isn't a documentary?

reply

It's not a goof. It was established in the series that chopping off the head or shooting at the brain kills Claire and Adam.

Well, how else would you expect optometrists to sell more corrective eyewear? LOL Everyone KNOWS that everything that happens on television is real and everyone will run right out and do exactly what they see on tv, in the movies and on the internet. This is why people spend their last dollar to copycat some celebrity's "style" while they don't have that celebrity's income, exposure or freebies from various designers.

In all seriousness, the REALITY is that some things on television and in the movies HAVE to be minimized for time/interest/appeal/etc.. Otherwise, we would be reading a gazillion messages about how boring everything is and movies/shows taking FOREVER to get to something actually happening. No wonder so many writers and directors are said to be drug and alcohol addicts - the public is NEVER happy with anything!

For me the biggest goof of all, was when Peter and Caitlin traveled to the future and PETER LEFT CAITLIN THERE AND RETURNED TO THE PRESENT. He then ALTERED the future he took her to WITH HER STILL IN IT...effectively killing her...or so we can assume, because the writers ditched her and her story.
