Why was the wife being such a martyr?

I don't understand how she could sacrifice so much. Why would she give up everything (her husband, her marriage, having children in the future, etc) just to help transform Einar completely into Lily?

reply

Because of love and care.

reply

Where was his love for her?

It's a one-sided story ... the story of him taking, taking, and taking, from her.

reply

I agree, she loved him way more than he loved her. I felt really bad for Gerda.

reply

I have no idea... I wouldn't do that for someone.

reply

Because she was a lesbian.

reply

๎€Ž~. Gerda truly loved him unconditionally and that is hard to to. I admit not everyone is that loving & devoting. I know I wouldn't be able to do so. The only thing I could do is to give the guy my best regards & support but to its limits and after the divorce.

I know a guy who transitioned completely to a woman. Let's just say his wife did not take kindly to it.

reply

๎€Ž~ It is so difficult to find someone with a kind eye or kind mind to accept that. ๐Ÿ‘ŒKudos to those who have the open mind with stick with their spouses after that drastic change. In the other hand;๎™ that is really hard thing to accept in your relationship.๎•

Take the story told in thee movie with a grain of salt. Yes, the wife was very supportive, but she did divorce Lily during the process of sex reassignment--which in actuality it was four surgeries spread out between several years.

When Lily died, Gerda was married to someone else and living in Italy if I remember correctly.

reply

I think they meant the wife in this story.

reply

you are joking right?

reply

Who are you talking too?

reply

how ridiculous- she was with Hans at the end of the film but she adored her husband and wanted him to be happy - she may have also felt some responsibility as it was her idea initially and she made a lot of money from her paintings of Lily

reply

Back in the day, a lot of wedding vows were "for better or worse, sickness and in health". Back in the day, people stuck to wedding vows.

reply

In reality, Gerda never had children even after marrying someone else. So you could say either she could not have them or did not want them.
It was publicly known she had lesbian trysts while being married and they, she and Einar had something of an open relationship.

The movie portrays a different reality which is very romantic and idealistic, but it is not how it all happened. Yes, she was supportive of her husband wanting to become a woman but maybe it played into the part that she had lesbian tendencies, and would not have cared whether the sex organs matched Einar or Lily.

Gerda would probably have been too old to have children when Einar decided to become Lily.

she wasn't - not the real gerda anyway. i think the danish girl would have been a much more interesting and complex film it it had told the true story of lili and gerda. my impression from reading about the two of them is that they had a much more mutually beneficial relationship until they finally grew apart and divorced.

Yes, it has probably been whitewashed to a certain extent, to make it a more palatable film.

I agree. After seeing the movie and reading up on the real life people, I think telling the actual story would have been more compelling and interesting. Honestly, as a heterosexual woman, learning that the real Gerda was a lesbian made their story make more sense to me. In the movie, she was very agreeable about a lot of things that I didn't think she would be, esp during that time.

I rated the movie a 7, but still feel the real story would have been better. I guess it plays better as a love story for audiences!

Huh, speak English Goobs.

Read English, Goobita.

reply

as soon as you write English, Goobs.

Go back to school, Goobita.

reply

Becuz she was to chicken to transform into a man -- therefore, she wanted to experiment with Einar/Lili, who was even phaggier than she.

After your use of English here (Becuz? really?) you need to go take remedial Rnglish classes, Goobs. Hope you have the money to afford them.

reply

Idiot, ever heard of textese and these are just chat rooms, NOT Oxford English class rooms. Duh!! You can be my secretary if you wish, Goobita!!

reply

No seriously, your English sucks.

Learn it or speak in your native language.
