Why so low rating?

It currently has 7,0 on IMDB. I really can't understand why. It has a very interesting true story, magnificent performances, superb representation of the era, and generally it is a wonderful touching film with a subject that we see very rarely on screen. But still, people didn't like it much. And not only the film, but also Redmayne's masterful performance, they say his performance was over the top. Why? He played the role exactly as he should have. He delivered the character's inner struggle flawlessly.
So, why weren't people so enthusiastic with the film?

It doesn't have a low rating, 7.0 average is a very good rating. Yes the performances are excellent, but to your last sentence the story itself isn't that interesting, when you consider all that has been in the news the past couple of years with Caitlyn Jenner. The transition is no longer novel.

This film is not about a recent transgender. This is about the first person who had sex operation in the 1920s. How many people knew the story of Einar Wegener? I didn't. And it was very interesting.

Maybe because it isn't a superhero film or a low IQ action CGI fest, which attracts brain dead "black and white" voters - people who only vote 1 or 10 out of 10 without a good reason which was why YouTube got rid of the star rating years ago

I prefer to give it 7.5 as I rarely give films 9 or above which is a good score and only a tiny portion gets 8

How can you give 0.5 stars to a movie/show on IMDb?

If you love Jesus Lizard and are 100% proud of it, copy this and make it your signature!

reply

If you look at his ratings you'd see he actually voted it "7". If you want to give it "7.5" you need two different accounts, vote "7" on one of them and "8" on the other.

Don't get me going on how to give it a "7.1" or a "7.2". 

Are you serious??

A 7.0 is not a bad rating at this point, certainly better than the vast majority of movies. But there is a bit of a history on this. This movie after its first couple of weeks was sitting at about 5.3, and has been going up ever since. That's because it was initially bombed by a bunch of bigots who simply hated the subject matter. I suspect many of them, never even saw the movie. Anything trans right now seems to produce a gut reflex mindless reaction in certain circles.

Wow... Thanks, that explains it a bit! It didn't even cross my mind! On the contrary, I thought the nature of the subject would boost the rating even more (now that we live in an open-minded era with all that gay marriage thing, etc.) !

It also surprises me that neither "The Danish Girl", not "Carol", 2 good films with gay subject, were nominated for Best Picture. Oscars were pretty conservative this year! Is it a bad omen that Trump will win the election?? <:0

Just saw it for a 5th time and I have to agree with you, that the rating it's pretty low for this specific film. The smaller grade that at least I could see is a 7,9. I personally rate it a 10 because I can call it one of my all time favourite films but in a way I'm even ok with the 7 rating if we consider that it begun to reaching it slowly from a 5...smth one !

Glad to get a little insider information here. I was also confused as to why this seemingly amazing film was sitting at 7... Which is what Andy Samberg's Popstar movie is also at. I understand a 7 is good, but with such critical acclaim and great acting, I just imagined it would have done better. The subject matter is fascinating to me.

The rating isn't very low?if anything, it's higher than I expected, given the material the film depicts, and the world we live in. Some would say it's because, there are people out there (whom look down upon the transgendered community) would give it 1 star and a poor review in a heart beat, due to their prejudice towards the community. As an advocate of transgendered rights, I adored this film, but some moments in the film did seem somewhat dragged on, some even sluggish. But overall, with the material given, they pulled it off much better than I thought the film would.

A 7 is not low, what's wrong with you people. Even a 6 would be good. There are, maybe, one or two movies that deserve anything higher than an eight or nine.

This way of thinking is yet another reason why these Movie sites should ditch 1-10 ratings. Simply counting the number of people who click a thumbs up or thumbs down would be sufficient. This includes myself.

Really? One or two movies, in the history of cinema? :p

It's still 7/10, which is what I gave it. I found it a bit thin in terms of character development, though the performances were strong.
