A tall, handsome, kind, compassionate manly man more tolerant than most people alive today? And he shows up just as Gerda and Lili's marriage is crumbling? If only...

I think Hans was designed to make the audience more inclined to forgive Einar for what he put his wife through. But I was so enamored that it only occurred to me towards the end of the movie that he probably didn't exist. So...good job, filmmakers!

Not trying to be funny, I'm actually curious - are "tall, handsome" men usually less tolerant than short, ugly men?

Certainly not. I don't know where you got that idea from? My point is that there's no way someone with all those ostensibly positive traits (height, handsomeness, tolerance) could have existed. Not in Lili's life.
