I want to see the movie, but I keep hearing how drawn out and protracted it is. That doesn't bother me, but I am a slow reader and sometimes have a hard time with subtitles. But at the same time, I HATE watching movies outside their native language.
From the trailers, it seems like the movie is overwhelmingly visual and not terribly dialogue driven. Is this true? Is there a lot of dialogue?

Interesting you should mention this. I found it tough following both the dialogue and what was happening at the start (had to keep pausing to read), partly because I was trying to work out what was going on, who the characters were, and so on. Much easier when it got going, though. Interesting film - I think it's worth the effort.

You're right, even though Ive seen many Mandarin/Cantonese films, reading the subtitles was not a problem but at the beginning of this film (Mahjong Session)- the dialgoue was indeed superfast between the 4 female characters - so fast I didn't know who was who...
Luckily it becomes readable after that scene.
Yes the subtitles with the opening secene with the women playing marhjong are quite fast. Although it's interesting to follow the dynamics of the group of women, it's not too important to the overall story if you miss the odd sentence.
Bravo, for saying that you are a slow reader but you prefer to watch a film in its native language and read subtitles rather than watch a dubbed film. I consider a dubbed film to be insulting to the filmmaker and the audience. Thankfully, they seem to be disappearing.
