Could they make a movie like this set in Vichy-France???

I'm not talking about a total remake, but the idea is such a strong one, you really could set this in any country that has once suffered from oppressive occupation. I think Europeans should take a leaf out of China and Ang Lee's book and start exploring their past for the sake of narrative and a good film. Being British, I'm so sick of these modern "kitchen sink", gritty urban dramas, I'd love to see a film like Lust/Caution (amongst others) set over here, something sensual, mysterious, periodic and sexy. The Germans kind of did that with The Lives of Others.

Well, there were some threads (that seem to have rolled off since) about Verhoeven's Black Book - not exactly Vichy France (and Eileen Chang's book predates it), but same basic concept *and* came out about the same time. That was a submission for the Foreign Oscar that year.

I've seen Black Book, it's awful.

If you like LC, then I would recommend Black Book and Head in the Clouds (Charlize Theron). They're not set in Vichy France, but they are set in World War 2 in continental Europe. They might be close to what you were asking for.

EDIT:
Correction: Part of HitC DOES take place in WWII France.

I liked all 3 films and I think of them as variations on a theme. They all involve characters mixing love, sex, and espionage -- and there are DISASTEROUS consequences.

What do these have in common?

The Matrix
The Notebook
Juno
Castle (TV show on ABC)
