wow! it was certified 12's in France and 18+ everywhere else

Kinda mad if ya think about it.

yeah, but European ratings are different. Often the rationale is that kids won't want to see the more artsy, challenging, or intellectual movies.

good point: social nudity is a lot more acceptable in Europe than in America. However, it's not just nudity thats being shown in this movie: it has extremely graphic, realistic (and possibly unsimulated) sex.

Graphic ... I would say "steamy". You still don't see vaginas, penetration or erect penises. I think the main reason it was rated 16 here is because of the violence (especially the scene where they kill him with the knife and it doesn't work at first) and because of the rape scene. AndI think 16 is very much the right age. All of the movie's themes aren't comprehensible for 12 year olds and the movie could be considered "disturbing" for someone who grew up sheltered. But at the age of sixteen one should be ready for the real world and being sheltered too much isn't a good thing anymore. At 16 it's about time to get aware of the things that happen each day all over the world, it's about time to form your own opinions and view of the world.
I'd say, except for very gory/brutal movies and except for those kind of movies that by all means come across with a very bad message, sans these two things, every movie should be free for 16+ year olds. Yes, that includes porn, with the exception for the most hardcore ones that would be considered highly degrading by most people or that include illegal stuff like sex with preteens or animals. And by the age of 18, one should be free to watch whatever the heck he wants. If you don't know what's good for you and what's not, you won't learn that in the next couple of years anyway.

Even Depserate Housewives

Even that! I know that's asked alot :)

USA it's one of the most puritanical countries when talking about sex on movies. Gore? Violence? Not a problem, man! but sex??? full frontal nudity?? God forbid!

Where else a censored version of this movie was released on DVD? Only in the countries where religion and state are more or less the same thing, I guess.

France's certificates are useless. John Rambo, a blood feast, is rated 12. Piranha is rated UNIVERSAL! And rating a semi-porno 12 is just a joke. Why do they even bother? Even the other European countries acknowledge that graphic sex should not be shown to under 15/16 year old kids. Another thing: Sex and nudity are still something that the vast majority of actors find awkward and embarrassing. It shows that sex scenes are much more difficult to shoot than violence. No movie director should make actors do these kind of graphic scenes. You have to sell your soul to be an actor these days. Lee is their pimp and he should be ashamed of himself because there is no way graphic sex is ever justified in a mainstream movie. The only reason is to stir up controversy and to make people forget the movie's shortcomings.

nudity and sex is a lot more acceptable in France

Because the French, unlike the Americans, aren't prudish about sex. Thank God.
