I always figured she just sort of chickened out. I have flashed on some of the ideas mentioned by other respondents in this thread.

The idea that Yee would have found a way to whisk her away to a safe place where they could continue to meet and "relate" is an interesting thought; but I guess the final decision wasn't in his hands. Which just goes to show: We create/aid/abet these institutions (invasion/colonization) in order to accrue power... which then just makes schlemiels out of all of us. *That's* only one of the real tragedies of Se, Jie.
