The video tape WAS NOT evidence!!!

I've heard many people saying "The Dad should have just showed the tape to someone."

Joshua never did ANYTHING wrong in that tape besides wake up a baby and videotape the dog.

Except when he whispered "you will never be loved" and went away in hiding, strongly suggesting the baby crying was because he had done something to it.

It's suggested. But never actually shown. That's the only problem with the videotape being evidence.

That's the great thing about the movie (and what probably irritates people with short attention spans and tiny brains who need EVERTYTHING laid out for them) - ALL the stuff that Joshua does is there for YOU decide if he had done all the evil that is suggested - it is VERY creepy if he is taping his family at night but yes, it does NOT proof anything. SPOLIER ---- also when the Dad smells the baby formula - it can be hinted that maybe Joshua did put stuff in the formula, maybe he did research abuse on the Internet and knew what to draw - he got his desire - he had the Mom put away, has framed the Dad and now can be with the uncle he is enamored with. CREEPY!

I agree that the tape was not incriminating. All he did was to whisper “you will never be loved” to the baby at which point she started crying. If the infant understood what he was saying enough for it to bother her to the point of crying for five days, I would be more interested in the baby than Joshua.

Of course we really only see Lily’s face in the video, so he could have presumably poked her hard in the stomach or something. It’s that she cried right after getting a visit from Joshua. Also, it cuts away from the video to show Brad, but then again, if the video showed something incriminating at that point, Brad would have reacted a lot more strongly right afterwards than just perking up in curiosity like he did.

As for the dad smelling the formula, that scene was not meant to indicate that Joshua had poisoned the milk, it was part of a series of scenes depicting the fathers progressing paranoia—and decent into madness.

in all of these posts, you keep saying the father was going crazy like it's his fault
the tape was very incriminating, he zooms in on her face the camera shakes and she starts crying, it seemed pretty obvious that he was hitting/shaking her

reply

Who said it’s the father’s fault? The Brad did the best he could in the circumstances he was in and pressure he was under.

As for the tape:

…it seemed pretty obvious that…
The word obvious means that it is not proof and would not be evidence in court. It is speculation.

I think it would be enough to commit the child to a psych ward though. Not a crime, but definitely sick.
