Do you suppose that he heard someone say it about him once?
Yeah, it almost came off as something he was repeating.

its been awhile since I saw the film, but i think I remember during Joshua's taping of hurting the baby he said to the Lilly
"No one will ever love you"
I thought he repeated it to rockwell in the park because he knew he had seen the tape and it would strike a primal nerve to protect Lilly. He was baiting him into attacking him in public to get him arrested.
I think this twisted quote really explains the mindset this kid was delving into... In the scene at the museum, Joshua said:
"If Apep swallowed you, you become nothing; A non being. Till the end of existence you'd remain in Apeps guts, slowly digested for all of eternity. And nobody would care because nobody would realize you were missing."
So basically when ever Joshua said things like "No one will ever love you." It seemed to me as if he was setting some evil Egyptian curse upon them that he got from the Egyptian book of the dead or something. He was always talking about Egyptian superstitions and methods and acting as if he had some sort of self anointed power against them. Why wouldn't he attempt it? He obviously did something weird to his baby sister and perhaps the mom as well.
