Why did he record it?

I don't understand why Joshua recorded his night time adventures. It felt a little 'sloppy' compared to the rest of his actions.

To me it felt like some hack (by the writer / director) to make the father suspect Joshua, without giving him solid proof.

It seemed to me that Joshua wanted to have the dad find out so that he can being agitating the dad to hit him in public.

his parents left a messed video lying around for him to find so he did the same. maybe it's simple as that.
