What do all of you think? Self-inflicted? He really was abused? I'm just curious to see what everybody else thinks.

It's been awhile since I've seen this, but I always thought they were self inflicted.

I thought it was the uncle, until the final scene when the uncle's facial expression shows he had no idea.
... so most probably self-inflicted.
