I don't mean the grandmother, I am talking about Joshua. Why did he go along with it? To what end did he pursue that? Just to cause a rift between his parents and grandmother?

Or rather between his mother and grandmother. His mother always seemed the most anti-religion, and he probably wanted to keep making his mum look bad to everyone.

Well, if anything, that incident made the grandmother look really bad.

I think this part of the film was showing that Josh was looking for help and answers from where he could find it. I have watched the film once but I think if I was to watch again with the theory that the audience was directed to believe that Josh was evil but on the other hand he was helpless and neglected.
