Does anyone wonder if Ned did the same thing to Joshua's mother when they were little?

Joshua and Ned already resemble each other a lot, and in the end, Joshua says he loves his sister (which I believe, as he has no reason to hurt her anymore). I wonder if this also explains the mother's weird/nervous behaviour. Maybe she wouldn't remember it, but is still affected by it...
... and it could explain why we never see the maternal grandparents.

This makes a lot of sense to me. Certain traits can be inherited, and joshua probably inherited his musical skill, intelligence, etc., from his uncle, who he easily connects with (unlike his parents).

Even if his uncle was not as bad as joshua, maybe he somehow contributed to the sister's problems, and helped to create what joshua ultimately became.

My interpretation of Abby and Ned's relationship is that they are very close because maybe they had to depend on each other growing up. I don't think he hurt her in any way though. My speculation comes from how Ned says to Joshua in the end about siblings can be helpful (or something to that effect) in strange times. Maybe he was referring to something that may have happened to Ned and Abby's parents, possibly having to do with the mental illness that Ned also mentions runs in the family. Maybe Ned and Abby had to lean on each other while one or both parents were going through some mental problems.
