But it's not normal to completely ignore the older child. Like you said, I think it's more deep-rooted psychological issues in the whole family, especially the depressed mother and slightly narrow-minded father.

I think his bizarre behavior like collapsing at the talent show and giving all his toys away to charity were just desperate attempts to try to get his parents' attention because he felt like they didn't love him. When that didn't work, he did everything he could to get away from his parents so he could be with the only person he felt did love him (his uncle). I believe that if he truly hated his sister and wanted her dead, it was certainly his parents' fault because he probably reasoned that maybe if his sister would gone, his parents might just start to love him again.

Joshua was a manipulative Sociopath! He wasn't looking for love because as a Sociopath he didn't have feelings and couldn't feel love. He didn't commit murder so mom and dad would pay more attention to him. His cold and calculated plan to get rid of his parents (and grandma) worked. He'll kill again.
