Most Loathsome Character

I don't know who I hated in this movie the most - the obvious Joshua, because he was annoying, evil, and drove both his parents crazy, killed his grandmother and would have killed his sister if he had been given the chance, the mother who didn't act like a mother at all... who is seen in most of the film laying around in bed feeling sorry for herself instead of being grateful that unlike most modern mothers she didn't have to worry about working or money in the slightest. Maybe it was the Dad who enable his pathetic wife to continue being pathetic, and didn't have the balls to deal with his son. The Grandmother probably had the most sense and at least had the guts to tell the "fragile" mother that she shouln't treat motherhood like a chore. Even that stupid pyschologist couldn't see through the kid - why the hell would the father call in a pychologist if he was abusing his kid????????? Duh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This movie was twisted and made you feel frustrated. The ending doesn't do anything to give you closure or satisfy your thirst for justice. Not the best movie and I was expecting far more considering the cast.

He wasn't abusing the kid. The mother was tired. The grandmother should have kept quiet. She didn't help. But I would have gotten a second or third opinion -babies don't cry like that for no reason. He kills the baby. Why wouldn't he? He's been trying for months.....

he didnt kill the baby

You're right. He didn't kill the baby so why that person said he did is confusing to me. And we also have no proof he killed the grandmother. At one moment, it shows her scolding him for walking out of the museum with the baby while she was in the bathroom, and at the next moment, she is falling down the stairs. We never see him physically push her. She could've slipped and fallen for all we knew.

But anyways, the most loathsome character is Abby. I don't think she cared about Joshua at all for his entire life. Not even a little bit. She didn't love him. She only cared about her daughter. If Joshua hated his sister and wanted to kill her, you can blame Abby because once she was born, Joshua didn't get the attention and affection he deserved at all. Joshua didn't feel like he fit in with the rest of his family and he didn't feel their love for him was genuine, and I think he blamed the baby for that. If the parents (more Abby than the father) would've treated Joshua with an equal amount of care/love as their daugther, perhaps Joshua wouldn't hold such resentment towards his sister. That's why I think Abby is the most loathsome character.

Come, fly the teeth of the wind. Share my wings.

The mother was obviously going through some kind breakdown which she had no control over. Telling her to snap out of it and just be a good mother is as meaningless as telling someone not to have a migrane. She needed medical and practical help until the crisis passed.

The evangelical Christian grandmother had "the most sense." Good one!

The mother, Abby. Whatever mental problems she had, she was a needy, whiny, self-pitying bitch who spent the half of the movie before she broke down completely either lying around feeling sorry for herself despite the fact that unlike most mothers she didn't have to worry about going to work or making money, and being horrible to everyone. She mostly ignored Joshua and treated Lily more like a possession than her child, she didn't want tp 'share' Lily with anyone, not a nanny (which I can kind of get) but also not with the rest of the family, she didn't like it when the dad was comforting Lily after Joshua deliberately set her off screaming.
With that for a mother, no wonder Joshua turns out the way he does. There's not only a history of mental issues in the family, but the mother herself has some very serious mental issues going on (including treating her baby more like property than a kid and mostly ignoring Joshua) but he will have learned behaviour from what he saw from both his parents (the dad evidently had issues too) and especially his mom as I guess he spent most of his time with her.
