'no one will ever love you'

seemed like a bit of a random line to send the father over the edge. Why did he say that? Sure it's not a nice thing to say, but I don't see the significance of it.

reply

I reckoned it was a reference to the video, in which he said the same thing to the baby.

reply

I'm actually pretty sure that the video reference(BIG SPOILERS ahead)was not meant for the baby but for his dad, since he must have surely known that he would watch the video he himself shot sometime. At first you think it is meant for the baby but at the end you realise that all Joshua wanted was to remove completely his dad from his life.I cannot tell whether that was his purpose from the beginning or it became so when his father started suspecting him.It would be much easier to take out the baby but I don't think that's what he really wanted as we are shown at the very end.I am also not sure about his feelings against his mother, does he want her back or not?
Another good question would be whether this boy was able to feel anything at all I guess..

Because of being different, Joshua never felt that he was actually loved by his parents or anyone else except his uncle, perhaps. In fact, the abusive marks on his body indicate that he was being bullied & no, I don’t think it was a sexual abuse by his uncle. He was “shown love” by his father but deeply Joshua either felt it was fake, in the sense that they only showed love to him because he was their biological son or it didn’t mean anything as he couldn’t just relate to them &their lifestyle. And/Or after Lily’s birth he became obnoxiously jealous & deprived of that little love which was shown to him occasionally.

So, perhaps saying those words had a twofold purpose, first to make his father feel how he felt, that is to give him a glimpse of his own personal hell & secondly, he knew that his father was vulnerable & it was possible he could use this opportunity which he profitably did. His father was in a lot of anxiety & stress not only because he had come to know what a monster Joshua was but his wife wasn’t well & things at work weren’t gong good. Joshua provoked him by first mimicking him & then by using those words, so that his scheme to be with his uncle would succeed.

I'd agree that he questioned whether the love given to him was genuine. In the very beginning of the film he told his Dad the that he didn't have to love him, that it wasn't a rule, so he clearly feels that he's not getting something genuine or on the level that he feels his sister is receiving. Whether or not that's true isn't the question of course it's just his possible motivation...you know, besides his being a budding sociopath. You've got to at least respect the kid for being willing to take a public beating to get what he wants.

You guys appear to missing the point: the kid is a Psychopath! Hello! His father was awesome. He has NO feelings for anyone!!!!! Not the mother, the grandmother, the father, the uncle or the sister! All psychopaths who kill start with small animals, move to larger animals, then people. His intensions are unknown because we are not psychopaths. There's no understanding it, there's no reasons why. He will not stop until someone stops him. Please stop trying to understand the motivation of a psychopath. The only thing that drives them is selfishness - pure and simple.

reply

I'm not really missing the point--I've just been educated enough to see that it isn't all as flat as it may appear at first. Film makers do sometimes want their characters to be a bit deeper than "He's a psychopath!" and that is what is being discussed here. Just because he's a psycho doesn't mean he doesn't want the affection, just that he can't give it back. He's still a child even if he's a psychopath and as such his brain is still developing so it isn't as simple as that.

Wrong. Neither of his parents were "awesome." They paid so much attention to the baby girl that they seemed to forget they even had a son. Maybe he would have feelings for people if they showed him genuine love, affection, and acted like they really cared about him. But instead, they just ignored his existence and only showed love and affection to the baby, leaving Joshua a sad, lonely child. And he did too show that he cared about his uncle. The uncle was the only one who acted like he cared Joshua was alive. Joshua felt that his uncle was the only one who understood and loved him, so that's why he wanted to live with his uncle and get away from those two "adults" who aren't fit to be parents in the first place. He only wanted to know that he was cared about and if that makes him a psychopath, then we are all psychopaths because we are all born wanting care, love, affection, and attention.

THANK YOU!!!!

reply

Do you really think he was being bullied? I thought those bruises were self-inflicted.

reply

If it was to be apparent to the audience then it would of been in a more possible self inflicted way. Read my bit in other possibilities and you might think different. Part of the last seen was when he was hiding from someone but not from his dad! The film clearly wanted to make you think the child was at fault and as I did you was thinking that Josh was trying to harm his sister but not protect her by keeping her in the safe haven of their mother. Did you not find it strange that the baby was out of the parents room too early? This in my opinion is why the only reason their was emphasis on the days the child was born!

reply

Oh my god, it's "would have", "scene", "there", and no, I don't buy any of that, given the lyrics of the song he composed for his uncle.

And why was the baby necessarily supposed to be in the parents' bedroom in the first place???

reply

Ok so I have dyslexia I am sooo sorry it disturbs you that you have to use blasphemy and in such a lame way, anyway its been thought that a new born baby should spend their initial months in the parents room and not just for the obvious reasons but cot death has also been linked.

And please stop wasting your time looking for spelling and grammar errors and get to the point next time.

Please stop searching for blasphemies and sorting out teh heathenz, thanks u...

hi there, I just watched the movie last night for the first time, and was doing something else when he was singing to his uncle.......I'd love to find out the lyrics. Then it was over!!!!!......I'm sure they have some significance. Can you help me out?

reply

In the beginning josh also said to his dad: you dont have to love me you know. He felt like they loved him because they are supposed to....

reply

The boy was deffinitly screwing around with his parents feelings, i think. He once asked his mom (something allong these lines): does daddy love me? she answered: yes ofcourse. Josh said: not as much as a mommy can... something like that.. isnt that weird???

and he also once said to his dad that his dad was very good at taking care of lilly. his dad said something like 'oh thanks' and then josh said 'you do this better than mommy does'....

hes a little *beep* up kid but what do you think about these things he said?

reply

From what I gathered, he didn't say it to provoke further abuse from his father. He had already got his father to hit him and it was game-over. With a child psychologist already concerned of abuse, he was doomed to be taken to jail following the first hit.

At that point, Joshua was no longer interested in provoking his father, he merely uttered those words to show him that he had won. The further hits that his father gave weren't part of the plan, as indicated by how stunned he looked as he backed away following the intervention from the onlookers.

That smile was one of the most haunting smiles I have ever seen though. Imagine that coming from your otherwise emotionless 9 year old kid...

Yep. And I felt it was almost like a "punishment"/stab type thing for the dad loving him, too, in some warped way. Like ha, see where your stupid love of me got you, dad, when I told you not to love me! but guess what, now no one will love you.

reply

That's not how I interpret it at all. People have probably mentioned it already but "no one will ever love you" is what he said to his baby sister on the video. He truly hated her because he could see his parents were giving her all the love and attention and completely ignoring him. I think "no one will ever love you" kind of become his catchphrase for people he hated. He knew his father didn't love him or understand him so he said this to him knowing it would provoke him and he could go live with his uncle (the only person he had a real bond with).

I've been waiting for you, Ben.
