The hole was suspiciously vaginal
I don't know if it fits in with the grander scheme of symbolism in the movie, but immediately I thought the hole to the better world looked like a vagina. A vertical line with a hole, the men loved the way it smelled, and there were children inside? And then the guy started going at it with a sledgehammer, then a jackhammer! Maybe it wasn't intentional, and just demonstrates how us men can't stop thinking about it, and colors the way we perceive the world and affects our art.
