I dont understand the man in the black robe's intentions.
he is not a true Illuminiti member so why does he do what he did?

He didn't want to blow up the vatican. The whole Illuminati thing was a red herring. A diversion. He carefully schemed the whole thing to make it possible for him to be the savior, carry the bomb out, and (appear to)selflessly rescue everyone. With the 4 preferiti dead, he hoped the cardinals would elect him pope, which almost happened.
In his mind, he also thought the old pope was embracing science too much and was "selling out" the catholic church.
^This. The old Pope was the only one who he killed out of his own actual passion.
