So the plot of this movie was...

That the Ewan McGregor character murdered the Pope and Cardinals and stole the anti-matter and threatened to destroy the Vatican just so he could save the Vatican and Cardinals and everybody would think it was some sort of miracle and appoint him the next Pope? I didn't read the book, but his master plan was to become the next Pope, despite the fact he was about 30 years too young to become Pope the traditional way.

You need to read the book. There is so much more to it.

reply

... but it is the same plot as the book!

reply

Yes, the plot was fundamentally completely stupid. One of the silliest movies to come out in recent years.

reply

Pretty much 90% of what is written in books are made up straight up *beep* Human stupidity has no limit, it has been shown time and time again, just one exception, we're far too advanced for most of them.

You must be great at parties.

reply

That's about it. Except that since the Vatican and the Ewan McGregor character would have been wiped out by the bomb that the Ewan McGregor character had no way of knowing Tom Hanks would find in time, the genius plan had a pretty high risk quotient of an epic fail. In fact, it seems pretty clear the Ewan McGregor character must have had every intention of letting the bomb go off since he didn't even seem to even know where it was (and "finding" it without the help of Tom Hanks would likely look awfully suspicious). So the plot was more of Ewan McGregor saving the Catholic church from evil science by blowing the Vatican, and everyone in it, up. Makes perfect sense... oh wait.

reply

In the book Ewans character had a "vision from God" that revealed where the bomb was.

I think I remember in the movie that Ewan's brand (the papal keys upside down) was a clue he "figured out" that would lead to St Peters tomb.

In either case, his whole plan was that Ewan would somehow figure out where the bomb was and ruse it out at the last second and put on the miraculous show that followed.

His only obstacle was Tom Hanks and the video tapes.

Bummer.

reply

well dont forget all the way through the film mcgregor wanted to evacuate the sqaure.

i think his plan is to evacuate the vatican, let the bomb destroy it and then rebuild the church for the modern age. a decent idea, but a dreadful, evil plan.

The movie made it out that the camerlengo had a plan to become pope but in the book, he never even realised that he was pope in the short period between the chanting and his suicide.

Yes, in the book he receives a message from God but I'm not sure if he was making that up at the time or if he really did. In my opinion, this is not clear. It's possible that he always knew where it was and made that up.

message from god vs made it up = same thing.

well i lie actually - if you hear god talk you are schizophrenic.

reply

You atheist er so dumb.

We are talking about fiction in the first place and having seen two of Browns books on screen, it seems to be implied in the books that God is real. So even if you believe God is fiction WE ARE TALKING ABOUT FICTION.

There's a plot??

reply

Outstanding three-word comment. One of the few times I've laughed out loud at an IMDB message -- thanks for the levity break!

reply

Ewan McGregor was the only good thing about this movie. Not to mention the hottest priest I've ever seen...

reply

I agree with you 100%.

He stole the movie from Hanks, specially in the last scenes, and he looked stunning as a priest.

There's more to it than that. The movie leaves out a lot from the book. The camerlango felt betrayed by the pope, who [Spoiler Alert] happened to be his biological father and a scientist.

reply

His plan was worse plan since I planned to watch this movie to see if it was rubbish as I imagined it would be.

reply

I don't feel the camerlengo's (Ewan McGregor) master plan was to become Pope. I think his master plan was just getting people to truly believe in the Catholic Church. The camerlengo felt that too many people were turning from God and finding the answers in science. So when he discovers that a scientist at CERN has created a scientific method to show how Genesis could have actually happened, the camerlengo sees this as total blasphemy and develops his whole plan.

Also, to all of the people in this thread mentioning how the camerlengo was possibly allowing the bomb to go off and destroy the church, do you not realize that the camerlengo always knew the exact location of the bomb and his plan was to save the church at the last minute to make it look like a miracle has happened?

The bottom line in all of this, the camerlengo just wanted to restore faith in the church and try to take something away from science.

In the book, Camerlango's aim was never to become a Pope but to show God > Science.

Book has certain pages of dialogue where Camerlango explains why he did it. That went completely missing in movie. He would explain why Church & Christianity was in dire need of a Miracle.

In the book, he learns Pope has conceived a child & it was himself & Pope did this scientifically thro in-vitro fertilization. When Silvano tells about antimatter, Pope appreciatesit, but Camerlango despises science victoiry to play God and his Pope being his biological father grows a hatred in him. He wants to show to the world God > Science.

He wanted to give a miracle for the world to witness. Camerlengo chooses to let the worldwide media know about the Illuminati plot to destroy the Vatican, thus creating global sympathy for the helpless Church.

He concedes defeat to The Illuminati, acknowledging that Science has won and Religion has lost. However, he then publicly fakes a last-minute miraculous revelation, claiming that God has revealed the location of the bomb to him. He then retrieves the bomb from where he stashed it earlier, and 'saves' the Vatican.

While the plot is complex, book would answer WHY Camerlango hatrches this crazy plan & try to show his perspective. That creates the whole drama.

Ron Howard & his team did a great disservice to the book by eliminating some crucial aspect of story
