Why was Langdon honored at the end?

As I understand it, his success was all part of the villain's plan, which was never going to allow the bomb to destroy the Vatican anyway.

Also, Langdon definitely was responsible for the deaths of the two officers whom he led to the fountain. Walked them right into their deaths -- all for the sake of saving that one guy.

Some hero.

Robert Langdon was not part of the villain's plan in either the book or the movie. IF anything, he was a wild card thrown into the mix. The real question is why everyone wasn't jumping up and down about the damage that he did to the Vatican Archives.

Wasn't the villain's plan to purposely "discover" the bomb right before time was up so that he could be the savior? That's why he left the trail? Langdon seemed to be integral to the plan. Otherwise, how could he have gotten away with the discovery?

In the book, where Langdon isn't instrumental in finding the bomb, instead (with a few minutes remaining) the camerlengo runs out in front of the crowd at the vatican, stares up at the sky with his hand up to his ear and says "what? it's where? I hear you! thanks, God!" and then runs back inside to grab the bomb. I just finished the book and am not making any of this up.
