really worth watching?

I remember when this show first came out I thought it seemed like a cool concept and looked pretty good but never actually got into it. Then when it first came out on Netflix I gave it a look and remember not really liking it for some reason. But a few friends of mine who have similar tastes in tv shows to mine had said the first couple episodes aren't that great but it ends up getting really good. So I just watched the first episode again and holy crap was it filled with awful dialogue. My question to people who have seen the entire series is does it actually get that much better or does the writing continue to sound like it was penned by a sixth grader? I mean it was plain terrible in episode 1. Is it actually worth sticking it out early on because I don't want to waste my time episode after episode just hoping it will get better.

In my opinion, it does get better as it goes on. Some moments and characters are scene stealers, even though the show is ensemble cast oriented rather than a lead or 2 leads. We get to know more about the characters, their personal stories, and what exactly happened and why. Give it a shot.

I think it really picks up after about 5 episodes.

I say give it a shot. I never heard of this show before I got netflix. I just finished a book with the same premise so I figure'd I'd give this a chance and it was bad for the first few episodes but it get's better. Hell, it was bad enough that a gave up for a week or so and started watching other tv series. But I just finished season 1, and it had gotten much better as it progressed. Actually I just watched Season 2's premiere and I'm disappointed to know it get's cancelled after the 6 episodes or so.

I never thought that the dialogue was all that bad, even in the first episodes. Could anyone give me an example of what you consider to be 'bad' dialogue? I have the entire series on DVD, and I just finished watching it. I thought that the series was really pretty good.

I couldn't get into it at first. I saw it on the internet and gave it a second try and became hooked. I believe the show would have had a longer run on cable.

This is good to know. I watched the pilot (Netflix) last night thinking this could be 'my new show' for a while but it was pretty poor. The acting seemed mediocre and the story not that fresh. So I wasn't going to bother but there aren't many other decent options on Netflix right now. So maybe I'll push on through… What, like Ep. 5, seems to be the consensus? (I won't hold you to it but if it still stinks at Ep. 10 I'll probably quit)

I live near the Eastern CO/Western KS plains and like post-apocolyptice stories so you's think ti should work for me but it;s just not yet. I'm really desperate to find something besides another cop or Dr. show to watch.

... really desperate ...
If really desperate, you can try the other "J" post-apocalyptic series: Jeremiah.

It is severely flawed. It has its moments, though, IMO.
Maybe worth a try, that is if you're really desperate.

It's available on Hulu: http://hulu.com/grid/jeremiah

really desperate for something GOOD, that is, which I guess means I'm not really desperate. I like your thinking though, thanks.

I hope you (OP) have already chosen, because my opinion won't matter to you. I found it unwatchable after about only ten episodes. The show is horrendously stupid, bordering on idiotic.

One example people point out (which I didn't originally pick up on) is that it takes place in Kansas. There are no mountains in Kansas. Except in Jericho, apparently. Every episode.

I know this doesn't seem like a great example. But you must admit it is an incredibly stupid oversight. Well the show is full of really stupid oversights like that. Like the whole town having no electricity, and running on gasoline generators - the hospital included. But the bar in Jericho? They're burning electricity like it is more crucial to run a blasting stereo and television than to run the hospitals' life support equipment. Stuff like that.

It is a dumb show and I hope you decided not to watch it.
