Good plot. Not a good show
Jericho is about a towns drama following sightings of a mushroom cloud from a nuclear blast several hundred miles away in Denver, CO.
The set up is pretty good for the show and I like post apocalyptic dramas like this.
However, I think the show is quite poor in its execution. The lead guy is annoying and gets too much heroic stuff in just the first 3 episodes. Lets see
- he saves a school bus of kids
- he saves a single girl who has some kind of thorax injury. Like McGuyver-save her.
- he saves a girl from a couple of prisoners on a farm by shooting a bad guy just in time
- he saves the people in the farm by herding them in cellar from radioactive rain he deduced on his own as fallout contaminated rain
- he saves the cops trapped in their car in the same farm minutes before acid rain falls although that isn't shown how he managed to do that
- he saves 1/2 a town of people by putting them in a salt mine
- he then saves them by digging them out with help
- he saves 1/2 a town by rigging up some kind of air generator - not sure if he was successful in that
- he saves the hospital by finding fuel for its generators in a quick manner
- he locates two planes on the highway, finds and brings one flight recorder back home
- he is the one to detect that the other plane has actually landed by correctly operating the radio equipment used to hear the flight recorder data (which is on tape? the medium easily destroyed?)
- he is almost responsible for saving Stanley by radioing his condition to the doctor who is conveniently his sister-in-law and getting him iodine! Why would people keep iodine like that in a basement on a farm? (maybe there is a good reason for this, so I'll let it go)
Come on.... this is stupid.
They need to let chars go and also show chars human. Not stupid and heroic like that in ridiculous ways when the rest of the show isn't like that.
After 3 episodes, I think I can see why this show was canceled. Poor acting, poor plot points, poor casting, poor direction and poor execution.
I'd rate this show a 5/10 = mediocre effort.
The mayor also punches his opponent in his office. WTF? Some other idiocies are the town has 1000 residents of which 200+ are in the hospital? WTF? That is 20% of the town and seems unusually high... And there is just one main doctor? No other nurses etc. seen. WTH?
Other ridiculousness and examples of shoddy and amateurish directing that belonged in 1950s -
- they interrogate the irradiated guy who conveniently dies just about to name the traitor
- Hawkins is left alone with him at moment of death. People watching him from outside conveniently disappear
- doctor just leaves them and no one hears the beeping monitors. What was the point of those monitors then to begin with
Such stupidity....
And there's a black guy who actually seems to be the best actor of the lot but is inexplicably shown shady - practicing dialogs with his family.
I can understand they want to build up crescendo and lead to reveals like he will be a good guy afterall etc. but it needs to be handled well.
Even the reveals as to what is happening should be drawn out nicely.. it's like food - take it out too quickly and it is not cooked properly. That is what this show feels like
