Why do characters disappear for some episodes ?

Heather, the teacher, went AWOL during the paradrop of the Chinese supplies . Same thing with the socialite/party girl who was befriending Dale . No explanation, they just drop off the face of the earth .

if you watch the intro credits, a lot of main character actors are listed as guest stars/special guest stars. Some Episodes focus on main characters and even if we don't see a supporting actor in the credits/character appear in the episode, we're left to believe they're still present in the Jericho world. Season 2 bumped some of the cast around. What were regular stars in season 1 were guest stars in season 2, and vica versa. In season 2, Esai Morales was in every episode, but was never billed as a regular. Not sure of the reasoning.

It's called budget…. most shows only get 6-13 episodes ordered at a time - they are never budgeted for an entire season. Producers watch how the show is performing and then adjust the budget accordingly. This show wanted to be another LOST and so there was meant to be a huge cast of diverse characters and stories - but clearly by the 6 or 13 episode mark, the writing was on the wall - things weren't going well. So you see characters completely sidelined for entire episodes, you see several killed off out of nowhere … its a sign of a show in major trouble.
