Mahogany chest (Spoiler alert)

In the movie, he seems to be cutting off 'nipples' from his chest. He then put it in jars in the washroom. What is the connection with this whole movie? And why is he vomiting blood? some kind of disease?

I recently watched it again and thought he was dying of something.

Or related to the side effects of having special powers given to him by the morlock people.

I wished they'd explained it, though.

reply

Yeah, I was wondering what those things on his chest were

Also, why keep them in jars? Ick

I'm watching the movie now, and you mean they NEVER get around to explaining those things he cuts off his chest at ALL? None? Nothing? No mention or reference? WTF?

It was my perception that if he didn't keep cutting those growths off, that he'd eventually grow to look like one of the underground creatures. Like the process of transforming is slow but if he regularly cuts the growths off, he can continue to look like a regular person.

I wouldn't put it past the writers to come up with some bollocks like that, especially after THAT ending. Arses.

to me it seemed like he was cutting off cancerous tumours or something, probally cos they hurt like hell if someone hits him in that area, and he was cauching (maybe lung cancer) i think though in the book its just explanined that he has some sort of a disease. but that was my theory on it.

he kept them in jars cos well hes a *beep* weirdo/creep

or maybe as someone theorised above perhaps they were ganglians that wouldve made him appear like a monster perhaps he kept them in jars , because maybe they wouldve mutated into something

i think its left to the viewers imagination but seriously maybe you should read the short story its based on it may give more answers! i know i will try to now that ive seen the film

There's a book to this crap movie?!

reply

There is a short story by Clive Barker in his collection of short stories called Books of Blood that this is based on.
I like the short story better than the movie.

ETA: The story is called The Midnight Meat Train as well.
