Why did the driver save Mahogany from the Beret guy?

From what I gathered, Vinnie Jones was just the current butcher in a long line of butchers feeding the creatures in the tunnels. Earlier in the movie, Vinnie gets in a fight with the Beret guy (Rampage Jackson) and is saved by the train conductor who comes and shoots Rampage Jackson in the head. Later on in the movie, the train conductor lets Bradley Cooper (Leon) fight with the butcher for a good 15 minutes atleast without helping him. Why did he help him the first time and not the second time? If the butcher just gets replaced upon death, why did he bother helping him the first time? He could have easily just selected another human to become the butcher.

Bradley Cooper's character was already chosen by "the fathers" (the tunnel creatures) to be the next butcher, as shown by the symbol carved into his chest. Therefore, he was given the chance to prove his worthiness by killing Mahogany. Plus, there's only one butcher at a time, so Leon had to replace Mahogany instead of just working alongside him.

The beret guy, on the other hand, is just some guy who fought back and would've probably killed Mahogany, which was NOT meant to be and would've been a problem for both the conductor and for the fathers.

Btw, the "beret guy" is meant to be one of New York's Guardian Angels: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guardian_Angels

Doubt it. Does it say "Desert Eagle point five O" written down the side of his?

How is one all ready chosen?

Bradley Cooper was not shown to the creatures until he actually was knocked unconscious. Like the Guardian Angel guy, we possibly could not have known if he could have been chosen because he also was not shown to the creatures.

From what I gathered, for some reason the butcher was dying soon from some illness thus the need for a new butcher, hence the reason Leon was chosen and not killed like the other victims.

If you notice during the fight with Rampage/Beret guy, the Butcher was having trouble due not only to his opponent's physical prowess, but also to being sick. At one point, the Butcher had Rampage on the ground and was about to bash his head in when he stopped, dropped his hammer, grabbed his stomach and started coughing up blood, allowing Rampage to get his second wind, get back up and continue fighting back and possibly win. Since the new butcher had already been chosen, beret guy could not be so the conductor had to intervene and kill him.

By the time of the final fight between leon and the butcher, the die had already been cast and the original butcher's time was up so the conductor probably had instructions to let things play out to their inevitable conclusion.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I've just finished the tale. There's no first fight on the tale, the only fight Mahogany gets in is the one in which he gets killed.
This first fight was probably included just to stretch the story, because the tale is really short (less than 20 pages in my edition).

It was most likely added to introduce us to the driver and their cooperation in an interesting way.
