Questions/Observation s (spoiler alert)
Contrary to many on this board I actually liked the big reveal with the creatures at the end. The movie had an interesting premise and a cool reveal but the movie was not well executed, vacillating between creepy/chilling and stupid. Not sure if overall I liked it or didn't like it. A few observations/questions:
1. The CGI was awful and too abundant. The train looked like a cartoon when it was going through the tunnels and they abandoned practical effects in too many of the kills. The ridiculous kill with the hammer with the victim's eyes coming out was laughably bad.
2. Why would you use the most splatter-riffic method of killing? Seriously, a meat tenderizer, butcher knives, and meat hooks.Wouldn't it just be easier to gas the victims in a given car or shoot them with a tranquilizer? Why smash their heads open or knife them a hundred times so there's blood all over the box car? I know from reading the threads that the short story said there was a group of people that cleaned the cars but why even make that necessary or leave potential DNA evidence?
3. How did Mahogany know where Leon's girlfriend worked? It's meant to be a chilling jump scare but for me it raised more questions than chills.
4. How did Maya know where Mahogany lived? I know she knew the apartment complex from the picture but it was at least a 10 story building and they walked right in after he left. I would think there were 100's of apartments in there and would have no idea who lived in the apartments unless you just happened be on the correct floor and hallway and just happened to see them leave like they did. Seemed a bit contrived to advance the story.
5. Why did the victims have to be killed on the train? I get that the train went to the underground dwelling where the creatures lived but I believe there was still access to that area through the butcher shop above ground. It just seems that at least one person over a hundred years would be able to figure out that the thousands(?) of victims that were killed over the last century all had that train in common, Leon figured it out. Even with the help of the one police officer it would be hard to keep that fact hidden. Especially the two men and one women. Someone must have known that they took the train from the party.
6. Why keep the 100 year history of the train schedule so in case it's found there is a nice piece of evidence that links the times of all the murders to the train?
7. Idiotic character behavior: Jurgis stops watching the door then comes in to help Maya to speed it up, then leaves the door open, then they spend their time looking at tools and browsing..Maya comes out and sees Mahoganys bag knowing he must be home and continues looking around the apartment for Jurgis.
8. What's with the mushrooms on his chest and why is he keeping them?
Again, a movie with a decent premise but some quirky execution that prevented it from being much better.
