Why USA?

According to Darcy, vikings may have worshipped asgardians as deities. So there is still a small link between nordic mythology-Thor and Marvel-Thor.

So why does Bifrost send asgardians to some village in the middle of an american desert, and not some place in scandinavia?

Because, for whatever reason (not wanting to send him to somewhere that may still worship them, to send him somewhere that he knows will humble him, etc...), that little town in New Mexico is where Odin chose to send Thor. Bifrost can drop you off wherever the one controlling Bifrost (Heimdall or Odin) sends you.

Agent Hill: ...Then aliens invaded New York and were beaten back, by among others, a giant green monster, a costumed hero from the 40's.... and a god.

Agent Ward: I don't think Thor is technically a god.

Hill: Well...you haven't been near his arms.

The Bifrost is a wormhole that can transport people from Asgard to ANY location in the 9 realms (which is how Odin keeps the peace between them).

The New Mexico USA location was predicted ahead of time by Jane Foster which is how she was waiting for Thor when he arrived there, so it was probably used before, which is why there were markings on the ground in the sand.

Jane was returning to a known site of the atmospheric disturbances that she was studying. At the start of the film, while taking readings, she mentions 17 predictable occurrences and says she wouldn't have asked Selving to fly out and join them if she wasn't absolutely sure....

That's what is bugging me. How could she predict that there would be an event at this exact moment? Odin basically latched out at Thor and kicked him out straight away, it's not like there was a regular convoy of people going to Earth at specific schedules and Thor was in one of them. And as we saw later in the movie, it's not like it takes a lot of time for the Bifrost to open. It's not enough time to go "hm I recognise these pre-cues from last time, let me fly my colleague over from whereever it is he is and go there together on time to witness it happen".

Probably chose to send him to the most backward part of the modern world, on the theory that there people might still worship the Old Gods. Middle USA is about as backward as one can get.

reply

I think there are more backward parts of the USA than New Mexico (although after having spent a night in Las Cruces, maybe I'm wrong!). But it has a certain alien mythology going for it (Roswell for example)

It has to do with the rotation of the Earth. On Asgard, they aim for Sandanavia, but by the time the visitor arrives, the Earth has rotated and the visitor hits New Mexico. It takes eight hours to travel from Asgard to Earth.

Really?

You might as well ask "Why was a Hollywood film set in the country in which it resides?" Also, where SHIELD mostly operates, where the other MCU films mostly take place (and are linked-to / referenced within each), and several other reasons.

As we find in the follow-up film 'The Dark World' and certain episodes of Agents of SHIELD, they do get off to the Hinterlands to investigate historical markers and connections.

It was an American movie company, the comic book version of Thor is an American comic. The movie is for American audiences. If it were Russian movie he'd probably show up in Russia, if it were a Japanese movie he'd show up in Japan, if it were an English movie he'd show up in England. I don't ponder this at all. It is an AMERICAN comic "based on" the Nordic deity.

Both probably.

More likely it is because you are too stupid to understand this is based upon a comic book created by Americans and the hero was given an affiliation to a super group based in the US.

When they created the comic book Thor, they took him and the rest away from being Norse gods and made them aligned with no one.

And, since it was an American living in America who created this Thor, it makes sense that he'd have him in the US as opposed to Norway since the author didn't know much about Norway and it wouldn't sell any issues if all he was doing was saving the day for them.
