If you were a Golden Gate Bridge official...

...and the filmmakers from The Bridge approached you and told you, point-blank, that they wanted to make a film that focused on the people who choose to end their lives at the GGB, would you refuse them permission to film at the bridge? Or would you give them the go-ahead?

And do you think the making of The Bridge was a net benefit to society? Or a net detriment?

reply

I would say yes to them. These people see this stuff in real time up close and personal all year round. The city doesn't want to take time to build precautions so this will continue. The film brought awareness to the issue that may one day be a catalyst for change. It's messed up that it had to come to this. The bridge was built in1937...that's almost 100 years of suicide and yet...the city does NOTHING.

What exactly do you suggest the city do? The issues with adding a safety railing or net were addressed in the film, and it's not like people would go "never mind, I'm happy now!" if that one spot were no longer accessible. Heck, I knew a guy who drove himself off the San Mateo Bridge - so where there's a will, there's a way.

Yeaaah, they needed 23 (out of 24 attempts) suicides in the period of one year to reach that conclution
