Not great, but better than people give it credit for.

It's interesting to see how everyone tends to kind of "pile on" this movie as being SOOO bad. While I wouldn't say it's a great "stupid" comedy film, like Dumb & Dumber, Almost Heroes, Scary Movie 3/4, MP & the Holy Grail, etc., it's not nearly as bad as 2.2. I'd say 4 at least.

The gags and jokes are constant and I'll agree that most of them aren't all that funny. They're overly contrived and stupid. (That is part of the point of a film like this, granted...stupid, contrived gags.) Some of them DO hit the mark, though, and since the plot was decent, sets were decent, effects were decent, acting was decent, it's okay for a cheesy parody comedy movie.

Again, I'm not saying this was a great film by far, but I'm surprised at the seeming hatred for it! I mean, there are VERY bad movies that are unwatchable. This was not one of them. I read the reviews on here and expected to see a really horrible, unwatchable film.

Any reasonable thoughts/comments? Who else thinks this was a fair movie that gets too much criticism? Was it the expectation that this parody movie would be better done and it was a letdown? (Is part of the "ill will" because the other movies made by the writer/director team are bad? I haven't seen any other movie they've made except this one. Is that what I'm missing in my evaluation of this film?)

It's the worst movie I've ever seen. I love bad movies, but when they're enjoyable - Undefeatable, The Room, Swamp Zombies, etc. There was nothing remotely enjoyable about this. It would appear the only point of the parodies was to make them look authentic. They did reasonably well in that regard, but the script, the plot, the 'humour' - it was all so beyond terrible I kind of felt numb, and a little bit queasy, watching it.

I felt genuinely embarrassed for the actors whose names are smeared against this thing. They weren't terrible, but they had absolutely nothing to work with.

I think its status as one of the most awful pieces of cinema ever created is well deserved.

I can't believe you mentioned Dumb and Dumber and Monty Python's Holy Grail in a post about Epic Movie! They are genuine classics, with great scripts and genuinely established, clever comedians. Epic Movie is utter tripe in my opinion. There are so many 'purposely' bad films that outshine it. Bruce Campbell has done many, but the difference is, he is a genuinely funny actor who plays so well on the whole 'over-the-top', 'cheesy' way of film making. And of course, it's ironically lead him to doing serious parts. With which he has excelled!

I agree "Epic Movie" wasn't *the* worst movie I've ever seen, but it's close. I've seen some bad movies that I've given three or four stars to just because I wanted to be nice, but this is so unfunny that I feel it's completely deserving of a one-star review from me. "Disaster Movie" was another one that I won't be watching again; once more, completely deserving of only one star. There are many, many movies that are much better than this; go watch one.

Did you seriously just list Monty Python's Holy Grail as a "Stupid & contrived"?

Are you confusing "stupid & Contrived" with absurdest?

Parody and satire are not simply quoting or referencing other films in different situations.... which is what the mentally challenged film-makers of these movies do.

When did I say Monty Python was contrived? Furthermore, absurd = stupid if you look up the definition.

Again, I'm NOT saying this is a great (or even really good) movie. It's just not quite as bad as I expected.

But you're correct that in some respects it's really "cheap" or easy just to reference other films in different situations. However, I thought Scary Movie 3 and 4 were very funny and did that same thing. So, it CAN work.

I agree.

This was much better than Meet the Spartans. It was funny when the Kal Penn character drank from the chocolate lake and the Wonka guy said it's not a lake that's the sewer lol. I thought that was funny.

Honestly, for a spoof, I love it. It's one of the better ones in the Friedberg/Seltzer universe.

It's a stupid movie meant to be stupid, I don't get the rage like "worst movie ever" most of the jokes are lame and over the top but that's the point, it's a spoof, I've seen way worse movies that weren't even comedies.
