Cheadle´s 2008 Oscar

Don Cheadle is gonna win his Academy Award with this movie.
2008 is gonna be his year.
I already imagine Dame Helen Mirren saying: ... and the Oscar goes to... Don Cheadle.

He deserves an Oscar. He could grab one as producer for "Crash" but AMPAS' new rules did not accept him as producer (just 3 producers can be nominated).

No problem... He will be an Academy Award Winner in a leading role in 2008.

No... he won't win. For sure. It's hard to tell who's going to win for sure, but I don't think it'll be Don for this picture. However, I think he'll generate some Oscar buzz. I really liked the trailer, as well as HIM in the trailer. It seems like a performance to look out for.

reply

Trailer? Have I missed something?

I would say that Cheadle is destined for an Oscar, but these awards can be utterly nonsensical, so who knows.

reply

I don't know what you've missed. A trailer has been released... if that's what you're questioning.

reply

Yeah, I hadn't seen the trailer yet. I have now. Loved it. Cracked me up.

Thanks for helping out the clueless.

Just saw the trailer too. He should win based on the strength of the trailer. Chances are he will definitely get nominated.

Guess what people....THE MOVIE IS ALREADY OUT IN LIMITED RELEASE,and it has been out in limited release since May of this year in selected cities across the country(it opened in the larger cities first like New York and Los Angeles and also Washington DC before going onto to selected cities across the country in early July)

The film is showing in about 195 theatres across the country...Why is that???
IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THIS MOVIE YET,PLEASE DO SO AND SUPPORT DON CHEADLE WHO GIVES THE PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR!!! 2008 WILL BE THE YEAR DON CHEADLE GETS THE OSCAR FOR BEST ACTOR FOR THIS MOVIE!!!!

I have seen TALK TO ME already and it is probably the best movie I have seen all summer. Believe me,the movie is worth the price of admission!!! Remarkable!
The movie has gotten strong reviews from not only Roger Ebert, Richard Roeper,
Gene Shalit, and Rex Reed but brilliant reviews from commentator and NPR correspondent Tavis Smiley, Tony Brown, Michael Baisden, Montel Williams and so much more.

reply

I just wanted to mention that I saw the trailer and the movie looks good. But if he is going to get an Oscar nod, it might not be for this, but for "Toussaint" if it's good and if it comes out his year.

And he might get stiff competition from the projects of Morgan Freeman, Jack Nicholson, Denzel, Johnny Depp and maybe Al Pacino...

But I am always a fan of his esp. since I saw Devil in a Blue Dress...

I agree, I was surprised too that Danny Glover is directing. I commend him for his activist work in Africa and peoples of African desent, but he is an better activist than an actor and this should pre-warn about his directing skills...but I hope this movie comes out regardless and maybe, just maybe the studios might wise up and get another director...

Remember the Denzel movie "American Gangster" was intended to be directed by Antoine Fuqua until he was bump and replaced by Ridley Scott...

reply

um... to my knowledge glover hasn't directed a full-length film yet so what are u basing ur criticisms on?

reply

Don isn't gonna win.....Denzel or Russel are for "American Gangster"

I love Don Cheadle, but I think Denzel is taking the Oscar.

reply

I don't think Denzel or Don will win this year.

Denzel is playing a similar character to what he played in Training day, NOT exactly the same, but kind of similar. Everyone is saying that American Gangster LOOKs similar to the Departed ( which is funny since AG has been in the works BEFORE the Departed and is based on a true story UNLIKE the Departed).
Plus The Departed won best pic LAST year. I don't think the Academy will award a pic of the crime/drama genre back-to-back. However, Denzel MAY get a nomination.

Don may have a better chance with Toussaint next year. His performance MAY be forgotten ONCE Oscar season kicks in which starts around October.Comedic performances are not often rewarded by the Academy. I do hope this film will get more recognition for Taraji and Chiwetel though.

As for winning, Johnny Depp (If it isn't a Willy Wonka type of movie/performance),Joaquin Phoenix,Daniel-Day Lewis. So far.

Don Cheadle has been deserving of an Oscar since Boogie Nights. Then he proved to be better in Hotel Rwanda. I hated Crash and I wish that he was never involved in that crap of celluoid.

reply

How about you wait until every movie is released this year before assuming who'll win best actor?

reply

Too early of a release for him to win the Oscar, it might even be too early for him to get a nomination. However, with that being said, Awardsdaily.com has Christian Bale in the lead so far for Rescue Dawn and that has an even earlier release date. So there is hope for him there, but overall I say it's going to be released well too early, but judging by the look of the movie and other projected releases throughout the year he could probably count on a golden globe nomination, but the Oscar noms are probably reserved for the likes of Russell Crowe, Denzel Washington, Joaquin Phoenix, Daniel Day-Lewis, and possibly Clive Owen or Mark Ruffalo or even Christian Bale.

reply

Although Cheadle played the role well he is simply not believable as a rough-around-the-edges ex-con turned radio DJ. The film is choppy at times and has a bit of an identity crisis. Would definitely be a stretch...

reply

I've been a fan of Don Cheadle since I saw him play Mouse in Devil in a Blue Dress, opposite Denzel. You could tell then that he was special. It's a shame he and Denzel didn't get to play those characters more than once.

I look forward to seeing this film, but I've been waiting for years to see him play Miles Davis, back to when it was just a topic of fantasy conversation that started with the question, "You know who should play Miles if they ever make his biopic?" I'm so excited to hear that it's actually in the works now.

reply

Don Cheadle is a fantastic actor. Crash however, was the most overrated movie of all time.

reply

honestly...I think so too. and..... if you're gonna give cheadle an oscar, then you should have given it to thim for Hotel Rwanda. aaand if not for that, for Reign over me. His acting is great in the sence that...although his character has great depth, he maintains a level of awareness that allows you to read his face and know his thoughts at all times. I'm sorry for the rant, but I just saw the movie, and...loved it.

reply

Reign Over Me was one of his weakest performances

I've got a feeling that this movie will get completely overlooked. I saw this movie tonight and the theater wasn't even packed. It's a shame because this is the most entertaining movie I've seen this year. The performance by Cheadle was excellent. I've never seen him play a role like this and he was great in it and completely believable. I laughed a lot during this film and so did everyone else in the theater. He deserves a nomination at the least, but I doubt it will happen.

reply

When a movie is released doesn't matter if it recieves a nomination or not. Crash won Best Picture (and deservedly so over Brokeback Mountain) and it was released in May 2005. Julia Roberts won Best Actress for Erin Brokovich and that movie was released in March of 2000 or 1999. Silence of the Lambs cleaned swept the Oscars and that movie was released in February of 1991. If the performance is there it will not matter when the project comes out.

The performance that isn't being discussed is Chiwetel Ejiofor. He's the straight guy in this movie but the story really centers around his character. The movie has two leads. Don Cheadle can be the tennis ball flying all over the place but Chiwetel is the net. He grounds the movie and usually those types of performances aren't recognized because it isn't flashy. I believe he was hurt in Dirty Pretty Things becuase his performance was so interior.

Don will get the nod for Best Actor. Chiwetel should get a nod for Best Supporting Actor.

reply

To further your initial point, Little Miss Sunshine was released in late July last year and was nominated for 4 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It went on to win two Oscars: Best Supporting Actor for Alan Arkin and Best Original Screenplay.

The same thing can happen to Talk To Me.

I also agree that Chiwetel Ejiofor deserves a Best Supporting Actor nod. He is easily as good as Cheadle in this film.

reply

Don Cheadle, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Taraji P. Henson are so good in this film. Cheadle is on fire in this movie, and Henson brings down the house with her comical energy.

To me, there's no finer current film actor than Chiwetel..he can do anything. If you want to have your mind blown watch a double feature of Dirty Pretty Things and Serenity. You won't believe he's the same guy.

By the way, check out Eve's Bayou, also directed by Kasi Lemmons--disturbing but highly worthwhile. Debbi Morgan gives a great sadly underrated performance as a medium. Here's the link:

I sincerely hope Don Cheadle gets an OScar nomination for this movie. It would be really nice to see a positive movie about Black people, whith a stellar leading actor, get this kind of rcognition.

reply

It would be great if Don and Chiwetel Ejiofor gets a nod. I thought Chiwetel was amazing.

reply

The more I see of Chiwetel, the more amazing I think he is. He's so radically different in every film I see...the doctor in Dirty Pretty Things, the drag queen in Kinky Boots, the somber villain in Serenity, the suave love interest in Melinda and Melinda, and now as a pool hustling radio executive in Talk to Me.

This guy can do no wrong.

And oh yeah, Cheadle is pretty amazing, too.

reply

I saw the movie last night in San Francisco, the theater was sold out and a very mixed crowd which was great to see. The movie received a round of applause at the end and everyone walking out the theater was commenting on making sure they spread the word to see it.
We loved the movie. Don Cheadle is the powerhouse of this film, however the cast as a whole was fantastic. We will probably see it again next weekend just to support the worldwide release weekend.

reply

Don Cheadle will certainly have a great chance to win the Academy Award this year with this film. It is an instant classic.

How about a bit of the old ultraviolence?

reply

I just watched this movie and I was incredibly disappointed. Cheadle's character is low key (or, more specifically, drunk) for the majority of the film and does not impress the way the trailer suggests. I found myself noting Chiwetel Ejiofor as not being believable almost the whole film. Aside from the fact that it seems like he's trying to follow some comedian's impression of a white guy, his role lacked nuance and dramatic weight of his performances in (the mediocre) Dirty Pretty Things or Children of Men. The film itself I found remarkably choppy, i.e., episodic and lacking any kind of flow. The humor in this film was either sparse or fell ridiculously flat, as only a handful of laughs were audible in the theater the whole time. The drama is laid on so thick, the film becomes a melodrama, and not a well executed one either. Director Kasi Lemmons has made a huge stepdown here from the last film of hers I saw, 1997's acclaimed Eve's Bayou. Don Cheadle probably deserves an Oscar at some point, but certainly not for this film. He did better work in Reign Over Me, Crash, Hotel Rwanda, Out of Sight, Boogie Nights, and in his very small part in Devil in a Blue Dress, to name a few. Better performances by male leads I've seen this year (in no particular order) include
Richard Gere in The Hoax
John Hurt in Beyond the Gates
Mads Mikkelsen in After the Wedding
Alan Rickman in Snow Cake
Chris Cooper in Breach
Cillian Murphy in The Wind That Shakes the Barley
Joseph Gordon-Levitt in The Lookout.

reply

not to instigate anything here, but i couldn't help but notice that your list was composed of well-established white male actors, and Talk to Me was a film featuring black male leads.

just a thought.

reply

I would hardly call Mads Mikkelsen or Joseph Gordon-Levitt established actors (not in this country at least for Mikkelsen). And Alan Rickman, for as long as he's been around, has never been up for any major film awards other than at the BAFTAs, which again does not make him well established in the US. I wouldn't call being known as Snape being established.

And since you mentioned the whole fact of black leads, need I mention to you that there aren't that many high quality roles for black actors in film, let alone that are recognized at the Oscars. Granted there were 5 last year, but since 1990, there have been only 26 nominations (of 340) that were for black actors or actresses, counting Rosie Perez who is actually part black. Only 12 of those 26 were for lead roles, and three of those were Denzel Washington. Ten of the 26 represent real life people being portrayed, a long time Oscar trend (of the 12 lead nominations, only Denzel in Training Day, Halle Berry in Monster's Ball, Terrence Howard in Hustle and Flow, and Morgan Freeman in Shawshank were not real people).

reply

I love Mr. Cheadle, but I doubt he'll win for this. Hope he gets a nom though. If I had to pick a couple locks as of right now, i'd go with Daniel Day-Lewis(There Will Be Blood) and Javier Bardem(No Country For Old Men). Although, Javier could easily go into supporting.

I think those 2 are locked for nominations.......even though I haven't seen either(No one's seen TWBB, yet).

If you haven't checked out the trailers for these two films, I highly suggest doing so. Bardem is absolutely frightening and creepy in NCFOM, and DDL has, in my opinion, the most complex character of the year(as far as I can tell from the screenplay).

Going to be a great second half for movies this year.

But if Cheadle doesn't garner a nomination, so what? He has the industry respect anyway. Oscars shouldn't mean much to actors who truly love their craft. Cheadle could never win one and still be A-listed and have artistic freedom in his choices of projects. He's a hell of an actor.

reply

Competition in Best Actor category looks tough this year (Denzel, Russell Crowe, Daniel Day Lewis, Phoenix) but Don Cheadle absolutely rocked this role and I seriously doubt his incredible performance will be topped by many.
Chiwetel Ejiofor had far more difficult job portraying his character and since he did it with incredible realism, nuance and subtlety he deserves Oscar nod too. To be honest I don't think Academy will nominate 3 black actors in same category, so Chiwetel could get at least Best Supporting Actor nod . Let's keep our fingers crossed for these incredible talents who still have to wait for their well-desreved rewards.

reply

I certainly think he will get a nomination, but I would think that Chiwetel Ejiofor or Taraji P. Henson for supporting roles are more likely. Taraji especially steals every scene she's in and I was blown away by her performance, especially since I had never seen a movie of hers before now.

Regardless, any of three has a great chance at a nomination and it's far too early to say who will win.

Cheadle is well-liked in Hollywood so that helps. I think he'll get a nomination but there's still other movies coming out that have highly anticipated male acting roles. He has competition.
