I can see the TV movie aspect....kind of more like a 70s TV aspect really. Nonetheless, there have been plenty of really good made-for-TV flicks. On that level, I enjoyed most of the movie. The period stuff was largely excellent (fashion and language), and I thought Cheadle did a fantastic job inhabiting this character. The shortcomings I think were in what you mentioned, and certainly some of the story contrivances. Sheen was stereotypical, but he played the stereotype about as well as anyone.
The soundtrack is really, really superb with very few missteps (as much as I love "Time Has Come Today", hasn't it been given its due by now?). Anything with the original "Tainted Love" can not be bad!
