Did he really walk off Johnny Carson

I thought that scene was so intense, but did it really happen? Did he really get invited to the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, choke up and leave like that?

That's what I came here to find out! Did Dewey Hughs even exist?

I would guess he didn't, seems like it would be online somewhere if he did- maybe tv.com if they list all the Tonight show episodes and guest stars- Much of this film is clearly done for dramatic/artistic affect- the movie starts in 1968 and we are led to believe that all that stuff happened before Dr. King was killed on April 4th? I find that implausible.

This movie is what it is- did it deserve Oscar nominations? I don't know- I haven't seen a lot of the stuff that was nominated or won this past year so can't say if it's better or worse or why. I do know that since I'm black this movie is more meaningful to me than that Edith Piaf film or the Coen brothers movie or whatever. In the long run though, I don't think this flick will have that big an impact on me- just a time passer that after having seen it on DVD, I;m glad I didn't spend $$$ to watch it in the dark at the movies. But the friendship between the two leads brought tears to my eyes and I like that Petey and T. Hensen's characters stayed together til he died.

sweet1310452, watch the movie again. It clearly says at the beginning of the movie that it is 1966, not 1968. There was plenty of time for all of the things that happened to happen.

reply

Correct.

Dewey Hughes is the ex-husband of Cathy Liggins Hughes, the woman who built the Radio One chain of urban-oriented and gospel radio stations across the US.

You can see the real Dewey Hughes (the soft-spoken, gray-bearded brother in the green shirt at the 1 minute and 14 seconds mark) in a YouTube video which features actual clips of the real Petey in action: "Adjust Your Color: The Truth of Petey Greene"

This movie is, at best, a loose interpretation of the facts and Petey Green's and Dewey Hughes' lives. For instance, Petey was never a morning DJ at WOL, he only had a weekend talk show. He wasn't some "proto-shock jock". When Dewey met Petey, Dewey was just a handyman at the radio station. Etc,etc..

And no, he was never on Carson.

IF I recall correctly, the story goes that The Tonight Show producers did want him on the show and called him but Petey blew them off.
