1. He had phone numbers of houses at which his mom worked. He probably should have brought those along with him in addition to the address.
2. Instead of walking around aimlessly looking for the corner with the phone booth, he should have looked up Domino's Pizza in the phone book. There aren't that many in East LA.

The reply that he was only 9 and it's a wonder he didn't get killed, doesn't work. He did take with him the address of him mom's PO BOX. Why not take the phone number too? Or memorize it, if he was afraid of being captured and searched.
1. He may not have known those numbers were there. We never saw Carlitos look at those numbers. Maybe his grandmother wrote them or something.
2. About the Domino's pizza - I thought the same thing. I mean, he found his father in the phone book. Why not use the phone book to find Domino's? But whatever, logic fails the characters a lot of times in this movie.
