i have to do a spanish project where i watch a movie that portrays latin american culture and i immediately thought of the commercial i saw for this movie. so i wanted to know if it does show the culture, or does it show more of a story..if you get what i mean. obviously i havent seen the movie so please dont give anything away. also if you have any other ideas for movies, feel free to post them.

the movie does a pretty good job portraying the culture. I was reminded of my grandma's house especially at the beginning because it was spot-on.

Latin American is hardly comprised of only one country. So, no. If you mean Mexican culture, yes of course.
shareEven in Mexico there is much more variety than what this movie shows. What the US knows of Mexicans is mostly just the poor ones who come over and the close generations that come from that. There is a middle class in Mexico and it is significantly different that what you'd see in a movie like this. Then of course the rich class, obviously is going to be different. You could ask most of the actors who play the protagonists in this movie for that perspective.

Yeah, I'd agree that the underclass Mexican is a little played out. That tends to be the cross-section of the culture that brushes up against LA. And it's all Hollywood ever seems to address.
For an alternative, check out Gueros. It does a good job of capturing the Mexico that you described.

shareI have seen this movie and also must write a summary for my Spanish I class. No matter how much culture or language is portrayed in this movie, the heart of a family shines through. No matter what circumstances or accuracy- hardship, strength and love shown through a culture is the key to success for an accurate portrayal of any life. This movie definitely has it all! Without giving too much of it away, I felt it was a beautiful story of a son's love for his mother and family!! Excellent!!!
shareOnly a portion of it. I mean 'La misma luna' is not a film like Frida, Like Water for Chocolate or Love at Cholera's Time. It's a movie about family, self-sacrifice, love, will, hope, solidarity and true friendship. Those values are part of latin american culture but then they are also part of any other culture, I suppose.
I bet a turk in Germany, an algerian in France, an Indian in the UK, a Vietanamese in Australia, a moroccan in Spain or a Pakistani in Bahrein (just to name a few examples) could easily relate to this film.
Not the "culture". I think it portrays the living conditions of the poor working class in Mexico and other Latin American countries as well as the dangerous journey of illegal immigrants to America.
