What the hell was with the religious episode?

I just watched s02e10 of the show and the whole episode just seemed so out of place. A few weird unexplained things happened (not that unusual for Eureka) and everyone was turned into religious zealots. They were going to attack their beloved sheriff who saved them all many times over just because he was following the clues and (very) politely asked the preacher for an explanation? I kept thinking they would discover some sort of airborne pathogen or virus that made these scientists act so irrationally, but it never happened and the episode ended with everyone in church singing Amazing Grace. What the hell was that about? And they tried to justify it by saying Einstein was religious too? I remember reading an article about Einstein's views on religion where there were many quotes and they sure didn't make him sound religious! The whole episode just didn't make sense to me. Am I alone here?

I enjoyed the episode very much. Lets face it, Eureka is/was one of the very few "family friendly" shows still on. I was glad to see the science and religion do co-exist being put on TV. We always get one or the other, when most, I think, have room in their minds for both.

I really loved that episode... showing that one can be a scientist and still be religious in some way as well.

I'm not too crazy about religion, but I don't necessarily mind it. I actually thought the show made religious people seem like total jerks. Ordinarily sane and kind people became completely irrational and violent when someone even hinted at wrongdoing by the church? Which in the end proved (somewhat) true. In the end I honestly couldn't figure out if this was supposed to be a slam on religion or if this was some ultra-right producer's wet dream. The show is certainly zany, which is a part of it's charm, but this episode was just weird.

No, you're not alone. The user ratings put that as the second worst behind "You Don't Know Jack". It was just kind of a confused mess.

Einstein was more anti-church (mainly Catholicism) than anti-God, although he was skeptical of a personal God.

Wikipedia has an article on the religious views of Albert Einstein.
To me, anything I have read on the subject sounds like he believed in something (someone), but did not know exactly what or how to quantify "God", as it is often difficult to reconcile spritualism or theology with science. How do you describe that which may be undescribable? Or test that which is untestable?
However, I would add, that just because a person has a high IQ or is gifted in science, it does not mean that they somehow intrinsically have a better understanding of a "God" or of theological and scriptural writings and meanings. A person can dedicate a lifetime just to studying ancient scriptures and ancient religious languages, let alone the higher sciences.

P.S. My post isn't to start a conversation (or argument) about religion.
Anyone interested in what Einstein thought can read the Wikipedia page and draw their own conclusions regarding the matter (pun intended E=MC2 eh?).
