Problem with Michiel falling in water

At one point in the movie Michiel loses control of his bicycle and ends up falling through the ice on the river. He is rescued by a German soldier, and the point of the scene (I believe) is to show two sides of the German soldiers; they could also be helpful and compassionate. This could have been used to set up a conflict in Michiel about their nature, but if that's what the scene was for the director did not follow up on it.

However, my little nitpicking problem with the scene is that when Michiel is pulled out he should be gasping from the frigidity of the water with other effects not far behind...disorientation, loss of coordination, etc. Instead, he is simply pulled out and seems to be acting normally.

Additionally, his bike was lost under the water and that would have been a large loss to the family in a time of war. Instead, shortly thereafter he is shown fixing up a bike with his uncle. Maybe they had a spare, but I was expecting some kind of a rebuke or reminder from the father about how rare bikes are, or to treat it respectfully, etc.
