The bicycle repairman thought to be a Nazi collaborator - I believe named "Auer" - was sheltering them. When Sarah came in he kicked down the snowman and dissipated the snow, as if to hide evidence that a child is living there.

I'd say that's a good guess. It adds another layer of complexity to Auer (I believe that was his name, too). Maybe he wasn't actually a Nazi collaborator, but a misunderstood good guy. Or maybe he was playing for both sides, although I don't see what benefit sheltering these Jewish people would have been.
