I personally liked that part of the movie. The bond that Sophie AND her mom had with all three men was so special and full of love, that in a way, they were ALL a part of Sophie. Each man was her father, even if only one of them was biological.

shareI don't, honestly. She liked the three of them equally, and she didn't want to have to lose that bond with the three of them just because she'd then be expected to favor one over the other two. I actually find it pretty plausible. But I guess they wanted to leave it open so they could make a sequel, should it be desired.
shareWell, I don't really see how she can have that much of a bond with three men she's only known for about five minutes. Nor that the supposed dads wouldn't mind either. But I had forgotten that this is based on a 1965 film called Buena sera, Mrs Campbell, which has an almost identical plot, except that the three men all know about the daughter, and have been paying child support for eighteen years without knowing there are two other possible fathers. So I suppose one shouldn't be surprised at anything really.
shareThat plot twist also could have been aimed at creating a 'Hey, it's ALL good, everyone is one big happy family here!" vibe. After all, if one man had been ID's as Sophie's dad, that means the other two would have essentially been wasting their time being on the island at all. Consider the plot twist at the end of "Pearl Harbor", resolving the love triangle between the two brothers and the woman they both loved. This was kind of the same vein.
shareIt's fairly obvious from the movie that Bill is Sophie's biological father. 1) When Sophie first meets the three men, Bill already knows her name, even though Donna later explicitly tells her backup singers that the three men "never knew" about Sophie. 2) Sophie is named after Sofia, Bill's aunt on the main island, a woman that Donna used to look after (so she would have known Bill for possibly some time before sleeping with him). 3) Donna is able to buy the inn with the help of Sofia's money, which according to Bill "went to family".

sharein the musical he doesn't know who sophie is. he only knows that his (great aunt i think in the musical) aunt left her money to family he'd never heard of, even though his mother was greek so his family should have known who it was that benefited from the will. it's implied that he has only met her once and it was then, 20 years ago and that she wasn't considered to be a close relative. he only figures it out when he tells her about his family connection to the island, when he says his aunt's money went to family, he stops and looks at her and there is an unspoken realisation between them. it seems like all of her family lived elsewhere and the meaning of family could just mean that because donna and sophie lived with her and cared for her, she considered them family. it could also mean that along the lines of your theory, she thought she knew bill was sophie's father maybe by way of donna mentioning him but it's very unlikely she would have known about the other 2 guys. in the musical, bill has no idea about sophie. so it does makes sense that sofia would think that sophie is bill's daughter but at the same time, it could be interpreted in a different way. you've given the most solid argument for him being sophie's father (out of all of the theories about which one of them it could be) but there is also room for a different interpretation on that
what i am saying is that it is not necessarily the one and only option according to the source material, but that the movie hints heavily at that being the case. that's all.
