i feel it should be Bill, because as far as i remember Donna was left money by a relative of Bill's (aunt, grandmother? i can't remember)in the belief that Bill was the father of her daughter. it seems wrong for her to have inherited that money if Bill wasn't the father.
What made *my* head hurt is that the whole plot is based on Donna not finding out that Sam is divorced.
Why didn't he tell her in the first place? Why did she automatically assume he was still married? It's the kind of thing you mention first when catching up! It takes all the pathos away from "The Winner Takes It All". There really was no obstacles for them to be together.
I like the movie, we need some uncomplicated feel-good sometimes, but this part always bothered me.

I didn't mind that too much. What bugged me was Sam saying he thought Donna would be waiting for him when she asked why he didn't call. Why would she be waiting if he didn't let her know he was coming back.
