Why is it that we are expected to root for the guy to get the girl when he was an obvious womanizer?

I thought the same thing. The only reason I thought she could look past his horrible behaviour was because of her memories attached to him as a child.

For one thing, he actually had to change,stop being a narcisstic a**hole, and because a better person before she even got with him. Plus their romance wasn't even the main point of the film at all---there was only about 10 minutes spent on it, anyway.
