Steve Carell has his pick of any script...
And he makes this piece of junk. Real good, Steve. Real good.

Steve has been picking a lot of lousy scripts. If this continues, we'll be seeing him on television, Sunday mornings at 7am demonstrating vacuum cleaners.

I wonder how many decent scripts are out there which are reasonably original. I occasionally watched classic films my whole life, but I've seen a lot more of them over the past few years. It makes me realize even more how much plots are recycled and how original ones are few and far between. For example, I was under the impression that Pirates of the Caribbean was relatively original, other than using things in the film which were inspired by the Disneyland ride. Then I saw a technicolor pirate movie -- The Black Swan (1942) -- and kept seeing specific details in it which kept making me think of Pirates of the Caribbean.
Another example: About a decade ago I was on a FOX.com message board discussing a FOX TV series. There was someone on the board I had become familiar with and the two of us came up with an original short story and posted it on the board (there was a section for things like that and a lot of people were posting their writings). Two-and-a-half years later a writer/producer who had already been successful in the film industry for many years, just happened to come out a movie with the same plot as our short story on FOX.com.
...One more example is The Switch (2010) with Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman. I was under the impression it was reasonably original and the screenwriter claimed he came up with the story (same claim from the writer I mentioned above). I found so many similarities/parallels between that story and Holiday Affair (1942) it's uncanny.
Steve Carell has his pick of many scripts, but not absolutely everything.
Actors have said many times, that they pick things based on how much they want to do it, and they always hope it will turn out well, but they can't tell, even while they are making it, that it will be a great hit or a great dud.
I thought the movie was entertaining. Lacked a strong story arc, but had a great many funny things, mostly courtesy Jim Carrey.
