I don't really care for Romola since Atonement....

But I LOVED this movie. It actually had a moving plot. And I love movies where you don't know if you should love or hate the main character. Yeah, this is an underrated gem.

I gather you didn't really like Atonement then.

I think both movies are gems but at the same time completely different from one another.

Both show the acting force of Romola Garai.

I thought Atonement was one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. I actually got into the plot of Angel. Atonement was so predictable and I don't really understand how people think it is so great and then overlook a good movie like Angel.

Bcz it's got a big name - aka Keira Knightley

reply

Yeah, and its too bad. Keira sucks.

Wow, completely opposite from me. I didn't even know who Romola Garai was until Atonement. For me, she was the one who outshined everyone in the movie and was so impressed with her (especially the French soldier scene) that I looked up all her stuff. I'm a huge fan now. She did a fantastic job in Atonement, it's one of my favorite movies; it wouldn't have been the same without her. I'm glad she was in it because I know who she is now.

I thought she did her best work in The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant.

to I Love Books : have you watched her performance in this?

twas made me a fan..:D

reply

^ No, but I want to!!! I'm not sure if Blockbuster carries that though..

It's weird because Rose Byrne has been one of my favorite actresses for a long time, and now I "discovered" Romola.. Such a coincidence they acted together lol!

reply

Aww, I'm so happy you've become a fan of Romola. She won me over with her performance in Daniel Deronda. I remember watching the miniseries on PBS and thinking, who is this girl? Now I'm pretty much a die hard fan.

reply

I thought she was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen in Daniel Deronda - the first time I watched it. I also loved Inside I'm Dancing.

I was an I Capture The Castle convert, saw that in 2003 when it came out and was instantly taken by both her and Rose Byrne, neither of whom i knew at the time. I've seen most of her films since. It's so wrong she's not a bigger star, while talentless boy/girl Keira is so popular. I'll never understand Keira's popularity, she's not that beautiful, she has no body and most importantly SHE CAN NOT ACT!

I saw Romola in 'The Seagull' (by the Royal Shakespeare Company) this past January, while I was in London for school. I was pleasantly surprise when I saw her as Nina, lead. By this time I was very much familiar with her work in Daniel Deronda, Rory O'Shea Was Here (one of my favorites) and of course - Atonement (which she give a great performance). But I have to say I was truly disappointed in her performance in 'The Seagull'. Looking back on it and seeing her work in other roles, I believe that it was not so much her fault but that of the director. That was the only time I have seen her flounder.

Was any one able to see her in 'The Seagull'?
