Speaking of over the top, François Ozon’s melodrama Angel, which debuted at the February 2007 Berlin Film Festival (and opened in France on July 1 last year) pulls out all the stops in bringing a romance novel to the screen in a story about a 19th-century English woman who becomes-what else-a romance novelist. The prolific Ozon may be looking to become a French Douglas Sirk. The film has been acquired by U.S. distributor IFC, so if you miss it at BAM, look for it on other screens in 2009.
