were the outdoor scences in London, Venice, Egypt etc meant to be deliberately "fake" looking?

Yes, Ozon is mimicking the 1920's style and to a certain extent its done deliberately.

Yes. Considering that the ENTIRE movie is an intentionally inflated, over-the-top mock-up (which very, very few people seem to comprehend), I'm thinking its a good bet.

Yep, it supposed to harken back to 1920/30s melodramas. It was definitly intentional.

No, I think we comprehend it rather well....
But a "mock up" has to make its point at a certain point. And this one.... just didn't.
