I would like to know about some similar tragic romance movies.
I would prefer if they is more tragedy than romance such as in this movie and they make you really sad. It would be all better if hero and heroine do not end up together.

A similar movie set during World War II in Britain is "Brideshead Revisited," starring Matthew Goode and Hayley Atwell as the star-crossed lovers. Emma Thompson and Michael Gambon portray the parents of Hayley's character, and Felicity Jones portrays the little sister. An earlier film version was set in WWI, as was the novel.
Also, "West Side Story," "The Student Prince," "The Thorn Birds," "My Antonia," and any version of "Romeo and Juliet" and "Wuthering Heights." For people who consider Anne and Peter's relationship a romantic first love, I would mention "The Diary of Anne Frank."

I thought of more movies with this theme. Three of them star Natalie Wood, and they are "Splendor in the Grass" (with Warren Beatty), "This Property Is Condemned" (with Robert Redford), and "Marjorie Morningstar" (with Gene Kelly).
Then, there are several based on novels by Charles Dickens. Two that come to mind are "Great Expectations" and "David Copperfield."
There are two films (original and the remake) set in India, and these are "The Rains Came" starring Tyrone Power and Myrna Loy and "Rains of Ranchipur" starring Richard Burton and Lana Turner.
Great tear-jerkers that are more recent are "September" starring Jacquelyn Bisset, Edward Fox, Michael York, and Mariel Hemingway; "Ethan Fromme," starring Jillian Anderson and based on a novel by Edith Wharton; and "The Age of Innocence," (also by Edith Wharton) starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Winona Ryder, and Michelle Pfeiffer.
Other films of this type are "Out of Africa," starring Meryl Streep, Robert Redford, and Klaus Maria Brandauer, and "Louisiana," a mini-series about the antebellum and Civil War, starring Margot Kidder, Ian Charleson, and Lloyd Bochner.
The first movies to come to mind are The English Patient and Cold Mountain. Also, Revenge with Kevin Costner (warning violent).

incredible that the closest one to this film is not mentioned: ryan's daughter.
they certainly wanted to emulate a lean epic with this one(well, even merchant-ivory have tried the same thing). and they suceeded, even though the film has its own modern charm.
ryan's daughter is one of leans minor classics, but it is closer to this one in tone.
so far this one is my favourite modern epic.

This reminded me somewhat of Jagten (2012), in a way that a little kid tells a lie that ruins the lives of other people. Highly recommend it.

Not entirely the same type of film, but I just saw Atonement, and I got a strong feeling of familiarity with Malicks "The Thin Red Line" from 1998.
There isn't specifically a central romance story, however the film has a very strong theme of innocence, loss, and love, contrasted with war. Both films also have scores that at times are achingly beautiful, and complement the images and themes wonderfully.
