Here's What I Can't Decide....

The father-son relationship:

Did Sir John really mean it when he said "I'm glad you're back, Lawrence" - I mean in terms of either loving his son or having someone he could bestow his 'gift' upon?

And the night before Lawrence went to the gypsy camp & was attacked - did Sir John really mean it when he said "stay in" or was that some reverse psychology to guarantee that Lawrence WOULD go out & thus be attacked?

You can argue both sides really. Or, all four, as the case may be.

Thoughts?

I think he was glad Lawrence was back before the whole gypsy camp thing. Ben died, Lawrence returned, there were less problems.

But then I think Sir John's attitude changed when Lawrence didn't listen to him, and went out, and was bitten.

Honestly, I think he was sincere at first. But he was slowly losing it as they went along.

The cruelty came later when he realized that Lawrence and Gwen were becoming close. Sir John had already decided she was his and didn't like that his son, however remotely, was moving in on his woman. Then, when he saw Gwen trying a bit too hard to remain uninterested he knew he had to get rid of the competition.

By this time, after 25 years, Sir John was going insane anyway. He really became unhinged when he killed Ben and it only got worsn when Lawrence appeared. By the end of the film he was a goner, having killed Singh, the police officer - etc.
