How much dialogue is there? My 3 YO loves TRIPLETS, but...

I was just curious about how much dialogue the movie has. I know it's officially listed as being in French w/ English subtitles. My 3 year-old loves TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE, and I really want to take her to this, but obviously, subtitles are kind of a non-starter for a toddler. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

There is really no dialogue at all. The occasional word is uttered, but that's it. It's a lovely lovely film with a rather sad storyline.

I saw the film the other night and there isn't any dialogue as such, its just the occasional word or two, the whole story is visual so I think it would be great for a 3yr old in that sense although there are some dark themes, however someone of that age probably wouldn't be aware of them! Anyway its a great film and the version I saw didn't have subtitles, in fact I think the intention is that the audience finds the minimal dialogue as hard to understand as the characters who speak different languages to eachother.

Hope this helps!

I love that your 3-yr-old loves Triplets of Belleville! That's one of my all-time favorites, and I think I would have loved it as a little kid, too... still, it's pretty creepy and weird in parts, so I appreciate that you are willing to expose your kid to that sort of stuff. I think it's a wonderful movie, full of surprises, and any kid who grows up appreciating it will probably turn out just fine :)

Also, I am grateful to hear that this also has minimal dialogue. Part of what makes Triplets so enchanting is the pure, silent-film-style visual storytelling.

The film has barely any dialogue, just garbled parts of dialect and the odd word here and there to convey communication. The original script was by Jacques Tati and similarly to his mimed physical style, Chomet's animation plays out its story almost entirely visually with very little in the way of dialogue to drive the story.

In that respect your 3 year old will enjoy many scenes but there are parts which I would say are not suitable for somebody so young. Perhaps you could watch it through and then show your child the appropriate parts after. Nonetheless, there are definitely parts of this animation which will delight you both!

I saw the movie tonight. It had about 2% dialog in the whole running time, and it was all incidental (more like Jacques Tati's films than Belleville). There weren't any subtitles, but they weren't necessary really to understand most of the movie.

Wait.. your 3 year-old actually enjoys Triplets of Belleville?

I am 21 and I find it scary and weird.

Are you sure your 3 year-old isn't traumatized from it?
